Labyrinth Of Lies
Unlike my family apparently, I love a nice heavy period piece. The intense subject matter interests me a whole lot more than lets say a divorced wife taking driving lessons. It's always great to see a good period drama.
In previous years some of my favorites have been Secret in their Eyes, Lives of Others and Tell No One. All are dark, heavier films. labyrinth of Lies is one of those. It is an absolutely perfectly made 1950's era German movie.
1950's Germany is a bit of an unknown era in history. The fact that the Germans were denying their own history is fascinating. I loved the fact that every younger character was completely oblivious to the atrocities of Auschwitz.
For once the 1950's period did not look boring to me. American movies always make it look so boring to me, not as bad as the 70's but still bad. Take it to Europe to make it seem a whole lot more interesting.
The lead actor was phenomenal as Johann (not liebert. Darn). I loved how he slowly started cracking over the course of the movie. The rest of the cast was solid as well.
My one real detractor is the fact that it's 2 hours. It's a bit long and could have been sinched up a bit
