Movie Review 159: Spy

Spy

First off, I do not like Melissa Mccarthy. Never have, probably never will. her particular brand of humor has never been one I enjoy. She has a lot of 'keep talking until i dig myself into a hole' type jokes. They aren't particularly funny to me. It's like so many of the Judd Apatow movies. I just dont enjoy her as an actress.

Spy as a movie is Ok, nothing great, nothing overly bad. just ok. It was fun and had a few really cool scenes. the Early Jude Law mission scene was awesome. but once it transitions over to Mccarthy it just bogs down to her making decisions that should definitely get her killed but for some reason it never does.

It's all explained later though, which gives some credence to the rest. In the end it just ends up as convoluted, even for a comedy.

I enjoyed Jason Statham as the overly cocky super spy. I liked him constantly making fun of the various personas he's had in other movies. Jude Law was good as the suave one that he is, even if a certain scene seems extremely forced (for a reason)

Rose Byrne is gorgeous in this, and has a relatively decent accent on top of it. Peter Serafinawicz is fun as Aldo, the pervy italian spy. Then there's the other 'basement' agent. Well, she was fine, but, uh, Wasn't she supposed to be smart?

Next up is the Action scenes. they range from very good, (Jude law's scene and the Kitchen fight) to mediocre (the boring chase scene and the Garage fight) The Kitchen fight was really cool but the Slow Motion seemed out of place and over used. You don't need to slow down the frame rate that often just because your main actress isnt remotely athletic and you need to cover it. That's what editing is for, make it fast paced not 'hey look at this random slow mo shot'

The movie has lots of twists and turns and after a while I just stopped caring. Maybe I'd get more out of it if the characters were just a little more three dimensional. you can basically sum up every character with one word. Frumpy, pervert, suave, ego, pompous, etc. What happened to good characters in comedies?

Final Verdict: 68

  1. I think Melissa McCarthy shows off her full comedic range in the film.
