Hello!
Welcome back the review center that doesn't review as much as it should!
In an attempt to get back into movies I went to see the Sci Fi Drama Ex Machina!
I'm have to mention some spoilers so if you don't want to have the review spoiled for you turn away now! Or not, your choice.
Pros:
I cannot start this review without giving huge props to whoever designed Ava. I was mystified by the See through arms and the fragile look to her. I've seen similar effects in action movies but this one was just gorgeously done. I was amazed with the way she moved and how the effects blended so seamlessly.
Domhnall Gleeson and Oscar Isaac were great throughout, I could never quite tell what Isaac was thinking and he made a generally intriguing villain, even though I don't ultimately think of him as the villain. Gleeson was very much his normal personality but he stood out rather well.
The story breezed by at a good clip despite the slow pacing. I never found myself bored at all. I loved the twists and turns in the last act of the movie. I honestly started to wonder if Gleeson or Isaac were actually the real AI but ultimately the fact that she was manipulating him to get her out was also brilliant. The overall feel of the movie was really good and stayed consistent throughout.
I have to give a should out to whoever's house that actually is. it was really cool. Now that being said, was that all just set pieces? If so, that hot damn that's a great set. I was constantly wondering what parts of the movie were practical locations and which ones were fabricated. I assume her room was a set, but the odd half underground lair was just too good looking to not be real. Or vice versa, I don't know.
I just cannot explain how much I like this movie. It's brilliant from start to finish, the great cinematography the pitch perfect acting, everything. It's a brilliant movie
Cons:
Even though I really liked the movie I had a couple small gripes. I mentioned the slow pace, this can be a detractor for people with short attention spans. It also got a little Mumbo Jumboey at times. they would spout out weird little things that just made them 'sound' smart. It wasn't the most solid script. Ava at times felt really slow and her scene tended to drag just a little bit. But it fit the robotic nature of the character.
Final Verdict: 96
Absolutely brilliant all the way through.
