Welcome back!
Final Backlogged review! this time it's the action physics lesson, Furious 7!
I'll avoid spoilers for this one. it's not hard but I will mention the now infamous Paul Walker send off. so be warned of that
Review:
I am amazingly impressed with how this series has turned itself around. The first few were very run of the mill and poorly made. (Especially number 3) Though, for the last few movies it just keeps up the high quality filmmaking.
While not as good as the previous couple films this one is still very fun and very solid for a seventh movie. The story is rather similar to other movies, I mean it's basically the same as Taken 2 with a serious lack of physics and stars made out of some kind of bulletproof rubber.
How many times should the various stars have died over the course of this movie? I seriously lost count of the injuries they should have gotten killed in various, mostly car related, deaths.
No that's not a stab at Paul Walker.
Anyway Vin Diesel's back as his normal, gruff, slightly over the hill persona. he really doesn't bring much to the table other than a deep voice and bald head.
Paul Walker, and his brother body doubles, is there. He's just fine but he's just not much of a character. I know he might have had a bigger role before he crashed and burned but the character just doesn't have any real weight on the story. But his send off at the end is surprisingly one of the best sentimental scenes in the last decade.
The Rock returns as the Testosterone steroid monster Hobbs. He's one of the best parts of the movie, even though he spends a whole lot of it laying in a hospital bed. The hand to hand Beatdown he has with Jason Statham is one of the best fights I've seen since the Raid 2 last year.
Then we come to Jason Statham. He is exactly what this series needs, a true evil genius. Who just kinda conveniently shows up at random points of the story to add his charisma and machine gunning. I have no idea how he kept popping up but I guess in a movie with Parachuting cars and a man surviving a collapsing Car Park i guess I can't question him showing up randomly.
The rest of the cast did a decent job, adding humor and at times the much needed female form. Yeah, this is basically a bunch of guys and muscles all the way through. Kinda like 300.
Inevitably it's not all good. the second act seems to drag a bit and they randomly head to Abu Dhabi for a set piece that seemed shoehorned in just to pad out the movie and have the cool car jumping scene, and bikinis in the desert.
I'll see the next one but it could start to become a trainwreck again. we shall see.
Final Verdict: 84
Very fun, very dumb
Now that i'm all caught up, prepare for some other types of posts for a bit!
