Hello again!
It's been a little bit since my last review, again. Damn work getting in the way.
Anyway the Oscars have come and gone. I ended up getting only 15 of the picks correct in my poll. Oh well. Was a decent show, nothing special.
Anyway I've not gotten around to watching all the movies yet, but expect a few of them to pop up on here soon.
Until then, Focus. The movie with Will smith and Margot Robbie. (The girl from Wolf of Wallstreet)
Behold a new review, and warning about a few spoilers hidden in here. so You've been warned.
Pros:
I've always liked Will Smith, even with his less than savory movies like After Earth. He's back at his better side in this one. He oozes Charisma throughout and I really enjoy how he can somehow make even the darkest situations fun. I really liked him as the smooth talking Con artist. it fit his laid back personality and watching him effortlessly work his way though the longer scenes was quite fun.
Margot Robbie, who's basically only known as 'the hot wife' from Wolf of wallstreet, is surprisingly good in this. Nothing amazing or altogether new but completely different than her last role. Less sexual and more innocent. It's a good career move for her and It actually gets me more interested in her as Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad.
I enjoyed that the movie never quite fell into the pit of predictability. I thought it was going one way then it blind sided me time after time. The final twist of the guy being his dad, and literally shooting him was something I didn't see coming.
I really liked the scene of Will smith going deeper in the hole at the super Bowl. It felt a little unbelievable ultimately but I enjoyed it.
The scene with the Thug buying all the stuff and crashing the car was phenomenal. would have been great if it wasn't spoiled by the trailers.
Cons:
The weird three year time skip was very off putting. Just all of a sudden, three years later. It felt almost like the filmmakers had an idea for a sequel but ended up cramming them into one movie. the two cons just felt completely unconnected. It lost the close taught feeling it had in the first half.
If you have Rodrigo Santoro in a movie, he's going evil, just saying.
Overall the movie just a bit empty. it was fun at the beginning but the end was a bunch of twists that were almost unneeded and didn't propel the story they just got themselves out of a corner.
I also spent the whole movie waiting for her to be a traitor. The trailers very pointedly painted her as this mastermind con artist but ultimately it felt like false advertisement. Oh well, wasted opportunity.
Final Verdict: 74
A decent flick, but ultimately forgettable.
Now to get some writing done!
