Movie Review 139: Into the Woods

Welcome back everyone!

So I'm back at the updating thing again. This time I bring you another glorious review!

I've just gotten back from watching Stephen Sondheim's Into the Woods. A fun little film produced by Disney. Why do I mention this little tidbit you might ask? Well, I'll get to that soon.

Anyway, Review Time!

Review: Into the Woods

Review:
I went into this movie with mixed emotions. I was in a version of Into the Woods in my sophomore year of school. We weren't a great production but I definitely loved the writing and the show and the overall concept.

Going in, I really wanted to love this. Yet This is one of those director's I have little to no faith in. Rob Marshall is one of my least favorite directors in Hollywood. He's done a couple decent films like Memoirs of a Geisha and Chicago, but Nine, Pirates of the Caribbean 4 and Into the woods were serious let downs. I don't know if he is exactly to blame or not but this movie had a great concept and great writing but for some reason everything else about it just felt cheap and barely done.

The cinematography was atrocious to me all the way through. After having some of the best shot movies come out in the last month it's really disappointing to see one where everything feels like it was shot too dark then brightened in post. It ended up making everything seem muddled and grey instead of the bleak yet vibrant tone the movie could have very well pulled off. the camera shots were so bland and poorly set up. There wasn't a single time when I said "That's a cool shot".

I know a lot of you will say "but the music is so good!" I'm not at all disagreeing with you there. The music was great, and I genuinely liked most of the cast. None of the cast seemed out of place. Except Johnny Depp, but let's face it, the wolf is kind of out of place in the original too.

I was a bit surprised by how dramatic of a turn it was halfway through. In the Broadway show we got a bunch of different songs, Like Ever After and Agony (reprise) but this time it just seemed like the characters forgot much of the first half. The witch completely lost her personality, then disappeared. The Baker's wife kissed someone, then Died. Jack's mom just randomly dies. The steward gets no comeuppance. Rapunzel and her prince just disappear. Prince Charming just randomly cheats then disappears. Everyone just kind of dissappears. It was jarring how the pretty good first half just slipped into a normal shrug-worthy end.

But after all these negatives I have to say, the music was Phenomenal. I love well over half of this show and I even have a few of them in my permanent playlist. But this movie can't skate by on just a good Songlist alone. I left the theatre thoroughly underwhelmed.

Final Verdict: 50
Great music, Horribly Shot
