Movie Review 132: Big Hero 6

Hello!

Welcome back to this most bustling blog on the planet! I mean, three updates in about four days? Wow!

Anyway, this is going to be my last review for a few posts, I've decided to try making some Top(Insert number) lists for a bit. I'll still be reviewing everything I see but I need to get active in other ways too. So look for a few Lists soon!

So enough of that, moving on. I just got home from the theater. This time up, the Disney animated Big Hero 6! There will be a few minor spoilers, but for the most part they won't effect your movie experience.

Movie Review: Big Hero 6

Pros:
I really enjoyed the humor in this movie. The tone was light all the way through and never quite dipped too dark. Nor did it ever feel too Kid friendly. I enjoyed the way the movie toed the line at times and found myself thoroughly enjoying probably 90% of the movie.

I loved Baymax as a character. He was constantly the butt of jokes and each one was perfectly placed and perfectly set up. I loved him trying to punch the door when they were escaping or his constant little 'how do I get there?' type looks and actions. Props to whoever came up with Baymax as a character, he completely stole the show.

Making it set in San Fransokyo was interesting to me. I like the fact that it's a combination of both Japanese and American architecture and technology. It felt like an anime. That's a damn good thing.

I had a whole lot of fun in this movie. It's a fun rollicking romp of a superhero movie. the animation was fluid and fun. It's just a damn well made little superhero flick.

A last Note...I want to Cosplay Kabukiman

Cons:
Even though I said this was a fun superhero romp. It's unfortunately just another superhero movie. Nowadays there are some extremely well made superhero movies out there. This one just kinda falls into the mold of Superhero movies before the recent surge.

For example. It's yet another origin story. Dead Parents, Waster potential, Dead family member that catalyzes a change, discovery of powers, so on. They even have the 'bad guy who appears randomly, then randomly has a super plan, then randomly starts trying to kill people. then ultimately turns into just being a good guy who is being evil for his own reasons. none of which were hinted at when he was introduced earlier.

It just felt like they took a 'How to make a superhero movie' Guideline and added fun characters. it's not bad, it's just in the new world of Superheros we live in, it's not quite up to par any more.

Also, the Portal at the end was a bit too 'holy crap we made a thing that does this magical thing!'

Final Notes:
I really liked this movie. It felt a bit like a giant ad for it''s new toy line but I still liked it. It's a fun Kid friendly superhero movie. Rare in a world of Dark serious superheros.

Final Verdict: 80
Fun and beautiful, but formulaic

Now to watch Aliens!
