Hello!
Welcome back, again. It feels like I've been really busy on here. what with the Deadman Wonderland review, or the Supernatural review, or this weekend's Skeleton Twins review. I've been on here for all of the last few days. Yay Progress!
Anyway I just watched the 2014 Film The Signal. not to be confused with the equally odd film from a few years ago.
I feel the need to add a spoiler Tag. There are plenty of odd things that happen as the movie progresses so I'd rather warn you now so I don't spoil any of the good twists.
Review:
This movie had me completely clueless for most of it. I had no idea where it was going and ultimately I was trying to guess right up until the really awesome final scene. Then again, I was also really bored, so I guess the leisurely pace was a double edged sword.
The Pacing in this one was really slow. the main character just kind of stumbles through the movie. No pun intended. I was intrigued when they revealed the Metal (or folded paper maybe) legs. but the Illusion was broken when he started running like a looney toon. I was also curious about the nerdy friend's Power Gauntlets. but then he started Spamming Donkey Kong's down attack and just turned into cool visuals that looked just a bit too corny.
None of the characters really drew me in. The main guy was fine and out of all of them he was the best. then you have the girlfriend, who did basically nothing. and had no personality the friend was just creepy and nerdy. Lawrence Fishburne was there but basically only had the one good scene. the Reveal of the A.I. 'missing the back of my head' scene. otherwise he just walked through the role.
I really wanted to love this movie, and not even the awesome final reveal could pull it out of just being a fully mediocre sci-fi movie with a few good props and a few interesting ideas.
Final Notes:
The Signal is a very slow movie, it plods on and never quite picks up til the end of the film. Then it goes overboard and has some really corny effects. Also some really odd looking alien weapons added in for whatever reason.
what was the girl's power?
Final Verdict: 61
Slow, but some interesting Ideas
