Movie Review: The Expendables 3

Pros:
These films are a lot of fun. Not good, But fun as hell. There's a certain type of film that can be dumb and implausible as hell but still be full of enough humor and action that you don't really care. this is one of them. It's tons of mindless shooting and fighting and relatively cliche dialogue but overall it just knows how mindless it is and plays on it.

This one felt like quite a step up from the other two. the first one took itself way too seriously and the second one took nothing seriously. this one finally takes itself as seriously as the audience is taking it. The humor was toned down a bit which gave it a more serious tone. and the action was toned down which give it a less 'we need kill things now!' tone.

Cons:
Already? yeah, well, each actor will get a separate note in a second so I'll do the bad now. It had a very weird pacing problem. it felt like a bunch of strung together action set pieces with odd lufts in the movie where they added character development. don't get me wrong I really liked the Character scenes but it made the movie feel like it dragged quite a bit.

Other than that I never felt like I got to see the various characters show off their skills. Jet Li never got any fight. Rhonda rousey only got some cool grappling but ultimately no good fight. which is a shame, she could be a very good female addition to the team. Antonio Banderas got a weird little parkour scene bu then never used it again in the climax. Couture and Lundgren did next to nothing the entire time. Then we never got a YEEHAW! from Harrison Ford at the end in the helicopter. There are so many little things I was hoping for but never got to see.

Also I feel bad for Jason Statham. He is miles above every other character in this movie. He was easily the best actor in it. Everyone else felt wooden or old or not an actor where as Statham was smooth and charismatic as ever.

The Cast:
So here's the real juice of the review. each person has their own pro's and cons. which I'll sum up in small little paragraphs

Sylvester Stallone
Stallone looked surprisingly good compared to the last couple. He seemed a bit more awake and alive in this one. and for an old dude he still looks ripped as hell.

Jason Statham
By far the best actor of the group. he oozes charisma and charm throughout it and never once did I think he'd end up sidelined.

Harrison Ford
Very obviously just a replacement for Bruce Willis. But he does fine. His first scene outside the hospital is pretty awkward and seems a bit forced but he's better near the end.

Arnold Schwarzenegger
Well, He gets to yell "GET IN THE CHOPPAH!" again, so that's a thing.

Mel Gibson
Mel Gibson kinda steals the show. He is a great character and is just perfect as the demented villain. I loved every scene just wish he got some good action.

Wesley Snipes
Honestly theres was a whole lot of hype created from the first scene being about him getting saved and him being a crazy guy and him being a medic. then he does basically nothing for the second half.

Dolph Lundgren
Well, he's in it.

Randy Couture
Um, he's in it?

Terry Crews
had one cool scene with a minigun, then was sidelines due to injury, sigh, waste of good talent.

Kelsey Grammar
Loved him as the contact. got to show a side of the Mercenary business we usually don't see in these kind of things.

Glen Powell
He's the Tech geek thrillseeker. Was fine but basically just ended up as 'i need to hack this thing' guy. but nice to see the 80's embracing technology.

Antonio Banderas
Whew about time Banderas got a job. he's been doing nothing good for years. and he was fun as hell in this one. the motor mouthing mercenary was great and I really hope he's back fro the 4th (if they make it)

Victor Ortiz
Um...was he in this one?

Ronda Rousey
Oh a girl! other than being flirted with by every guy she managed to hold her own rather well. I'd be curious to see if she returns and if she gets more than just smirks and some kicks.

Kellan Lutz
Was a good young Barney Ross. Could be a good dynamic in the future.

Jet Li
Welp. He was in it. and he's now gay. wow....so, where's Jackie Chan?

Final Notes:
I really enjoyed the film and it was a good action flick but it just wasn't a good movie.

FINAL VERDICT: 72
Fun but Dumb (again)
