Welcome back!
So it's been a little bit since I reviewed Get on Up. and we all know how little I enjoyed that.
Anyway jump to today, it's been a rather uneventful week. Except for the flood that rolled through Detroit on Monday. That gave me an idea. I'm gonna see the movie about giant storms!
Shot in Detroit! I kid you not, this was shot in Auburn hills and Pontiac sometime last year.
To fully review this I have to add some spoilers. it's not like the spoilers are what you're watching the movie for of course.
Pros:
I went into this movie expecting it to be horrible. terrible ratings online and uninspired trailers. Yet I had a really good time. It started slow but I really enjoyed myself as it got going. once the Hail started falling it ramped way up. The twister scenes were phenomenal and I loved the way the debris interacted with the sets.
I overall enjoyed the movie quite a lot as it ramped up. the various destruction scenes were astounding for what i figured was a low budget.
The cast did a decent job. They didn't have a whole lot to do but when they did they did a good job. I personally liked the two brothers (and the girlfriend..yowza). It was also interesting to see Thorin out of Dwarf mode.
I also never felt like it was shot here. That's surprising, usually I can tell.
Cons:
Other than the Effects this movie really wasn't much of a movie. It honestly felt like a bunch of people just getting together videotaping themselves. The heavy handed attempt to use the Hand held camera format seemed to come and go. There were a bunch of establishing shots obviously shot with normal cameras, yet they insisted on using handheld for the rest of it. It got annoying that they kept jumping back and forth never quite deciding which format they wanted to be in.
Next up, Pacing. During the storm scenes with breezes by, but before then it just plods out. It is so slow during the beginning. I know it's just setting up characters. but they had probably 10 or so scenes what were basically just making sure you understand the people's motivations. Give us a bit more credit.
And Lori...Yeah
The other thing that just kind of Irked me was the son not dying. He was underwater for a very long time but when an untrained dad gives him CPR, he's perfectly fine. I know it's the happier choice but I personally would have killed him.
FINAL VERDICT: 63
Lots of fun, but not the smartest movie out there.
Now to play a game or edit!
