Hello!
Welcome back to this, the wonderful world of blog reviews! I know, you've missed me. i'm the single most important part of your day. Yeah, Uh huh.
So, that's basically just my James Brown impersonation. Now for the review of his Biopic, Get On Up.
Pros:
Chadwick Boseman is the star of this film. not just because he is actually the main star but he shines in this one. Just like in 42 he plays yet another Black idol with perfect skill. This time he's the Ego Centric asshole genius singer James brown, who loves James brown and thinks you should love James brown....James Brown.
The only other real positive is I think the different era's in history looked and felt like they were supposed to.
Cons:
yeah, if you can't tell I had to speed through the pro's to get to what I really want to say, Cons. This movie is a chore to sit through. The main character is an abusive asshole all the way through. I was never much of a James Brown fan to start with. I've always felt he was a bit Overappreciated. But this movie just makes him seem like the most important guy on the face of the planet.
Everyone called him a genius, well throughout this movie I only remember one scene where he did anything remotely genius-ish. and even then it turned into a scene about how important James Brown was to James Brown. That's basically how every scene went, started one way then ended with James Brown going off on a James Brown moment. it's very hard to make me care about a person who only cares about himself.
Next up I have to point out the Special Effects Make-up. Usually this Field only ends up in the Pro's or I just don't notice it at all, but this one had some horrible make-ups. I could very obviously tell that the actors had layers of makeup on and at times It was so distracting that I was counting how many different places had been changed by the make-up artists. The scene between James Brown and Mr Byrd near the end was horrible. both were loaded with prosthetics and it felt like two wax figured talking to each other.
I'm really wondering if the editor was on something too. It kept jumping between different points in his life. It kind of felt like they had a big coherent movie then threw it in a Lottery machine and drew the scenes out randomly and got the movie. a lot of the movie made no sense and the constant 4th wall breaks fell heavy handed and completely unneeded. Theres only so many times young James Brown can stare at the camera before you go "what the hell are you staring at Kid?
In that same respect the crew should have noticed that a whole lot of extras were looking at the camera as well. especially during the James Brown with children scene.
Final Thoughts:
I can't even say I enjoyed this. it was long, boring and dedicated to telling the convoluted story of an abusive and neglectful egocentric.
FINAL VERDICT: 25
Good acting by Boseman, Horrible editing and makeup, and Atrocious characters.
Now to finish up whatever it is im doing! Till it be later!
