Movie Review: The One I Love

Hello!

Notice how I didn't say bonjour for a Change today?

Anyway this is my final review of the 2014th TCFF festival! If you're only reading this because of the reviews feel free to follow me! I post reviews of every movie I watch, and that's quite a lot! (Not 5 a day but close enough)

Anyway now that the shameless self promotion is out of the way, final review time!

I really wish I could do this review without spoilers. This movie is brilliant and you should go into it knowing nothing. So if you are interested in it, see it. Otherwise I'll be spoiling some big plot points you'll wish I didn't spoil.

Movie Review: The One I Love

Pros:
The One I love is a really ingenious comedy. The whole 'couples retreat' idea has been done in various other movies. Usually to less effect. But the addition of the doubles was great. The idea that you could fall in love with your lovers clone was brilliant. And the tension and concepts brought up over the course of the movie really ones to point out how well scripted this was.

Elizabeth Moss and mark Duplass easily carry this film. Both identities were recognizable and both were distinct enough to never be confusing. I loved the subtleness of some of the scenes and the clone effect was done perfectly.

Usually coming effects feel wonky and forced but this one was realistic, no seams!

Cons:
Unfortunately the writer felt the need to explain the concept a bit too much. The movie started to unravel near the end in an attempt to explain the reason why there are clones and the 'no leaving' rule. It felt like the writer had a brilliant idea but couldn't figure out how to end it.

Also I called that it was the clone right away. And that the bacon would be the notifier.

Final Notes:
I really enjoyed this. It had a great concept and great acting. It just didn't need to be explained as much.

FINAL VERDICT: 91

Now to fall asleep! I know it's not glamorous or anything but, well, the festivals over. Time to go back to mediocre action movies and cliche comedies. It's been a good year and I'm looking forward to next year.
