Movie Review 106: About Time

Welcome Back!

It's been a few days since I did a review. so I figured it's about time I did another one.

This time up was the delightful little romantic comedy Drama About Time, Starring Domnall Gleeson, Rachel Mcadams and Bill Nighy.

Even though usually these kinds of movies are rather predictable, this one i really believe that spoilers would ruin the movie. So, I'll warn you now, my review is going to have big spoilers in it. you've been warned.

Movie Review: About Time

Pros:
This movie was delightful. I knew it was great, various friends have given it good reviews over the past year, but I didn't get around to watching it until today, shame on me. It was one of the best romantic comedies I've seen in a long time. It was also not scared to go dark.

I loved the fact that the main emotional storyline didn't end up as him getting the girl. it was the relationship between him and his dad. This actually hit me really powerfully. Basically in my life the only person who's always there for me is my father. The way the movie portrayed their relationship was perfect. I actually got choked up near the end, which is completely out of character for me. Anyway, the way they showed the dad's death was perfect, they never actually showed him dead, but they had them  alluded to instead by having the two of them just sitting and talking. it made a much more impactful scene to have The father realize he's dying.

Domnall Gleeson was stupendous as Tim. I've loved him for quite a while now but this movie was all his. This should be his break out movie. Rachel Mcadams was cute as Mary, and she's continued to pick good movies to star in.

But the real scene stealer here was Bill Nighy. he ate up every one of his scenes. the late movie scenes like him and Gleeson playing Ping Pong for the last time were true testaments to his acting skills. I love him as an actor.

Cons:
The only real Con I can think of are the various inconsistencies during the movie. for example, when Kit Kat has the drunk driving accident, they go back in time. Then he fixes it and jumps back (something they never established before, even though Nighy said they cant go forward in time) then he comes forward to find a different kid. and then it's back to normal. did he go back in time to set his sister back up with her sadistic boyfriend? did she remember it all the way to the present? it's all a bit of a jumbled mess when you really think about it, but I guess all time travel movies are.

Final Notes:
This movie is great. I really wish I saw it in theatres.

FINAL VERDICT: 97
Absolutely brilliant, but muddled Time Travel
