Anime Season Review: Knights of Sidonia

Ohayo!

Yeah, I know, it's been months since I did an anime Review!

Well I'm back with one! It's reviewing the Netflix Original Series Knights of Sidonia.

Is netflix's First venture into making anime a success? Might as well read on to find out!

Anime Season Review: Knights of Sidonia
Season 1

Pros:
The Show has a very intriguing plot. Set a thousand years or so in the future, the human race has left earth and is floating though space in an ark type ship called Sidonia. Sidonia is part Steam Punk part Cyber Punk. It has a very unique feel I havent seen in other anime's lately, I like the concept of the frequent gravity shifts and the way the action outside the ship affected the characters inside it. it all felt connected.

The story itself was fun, never quite falling into the harem category even though Tanikaze has practically every girl lusting over him.

To me Shinatose was the most interesting character in the show. I like the fact that she's actually ambisexual. neither a girl nor a boy until her body needs her to be. The show did a good job of showing it without full on hitting you over the head with it. I liked the touch of the one girl saying 'as his guy friend' or when the vendor called her a pretty girl. these small touches made her character fascinating through most of the series

otherwise I liked Hoshijiro and a few other supporting characters. overall the cast did a decent job, even with some iffy dialogue.

I'll get into the character animation in a second but I really loved the way the worlds were designed. The grimy and beat up sets and all the cool mechs. I really liked the overall look of the series. The action scene were well made, and after a few episodes became well shot. The show has a unique look and feel all around.

The Gauna's were a weird creature and I'd be curious to potentially learn more about them in a second season

Cons:
I really disliked the character animations. The CG animated characters moved very robotically and almost seemed like a poorly animated video game cutscene. They 'locked' into positions where normal anime has nice fluid movements, usually. This one felt very lackluster, especially the first few episodes.

It took me over half the season to finally understand which characters were which. Most anime's have very distinct looking characters, and there are even those few that have realistic animation but diverse characteristics or voice actors. this one fell into the category of Similar looks, similar characteristics, iffy character animation and similar sounding Voice actors. It was a bit of a frustration early on but after I started recognizing names and features t became a bit better.

The show insisted on reusing a few shots, like the 4 person docking shot or the 4 mech ejection shots. not a huge deal but for a detail oriented person it' a bit annoying

Final Notes:
Even with the awkward animation and characters I really liked this show, It has a unique feel and for a first time production company it's not bad, i'd be curious what more Polygon studios does, just work on the Facial animations. it kept reminding me of the Backstreet boys video (video below)

Final Verdict: 84
Great story and action, horrible character animation
