Welcome Back everybody!
Sorry for the long gap in updates. I know I keep saying I'll update more, but I never do. I'm a bad blogger, sorry.
Anyway I've got a doozy of a movie to review for you today. it comes in the form of X-Men: Days of Future Past. Being that this is just the intro I won't give too much of it away but I will throw it out there that this review is full of Spoilers. So if you haven't seen the film, do not, under any circumstances, read this review. It will spoil it. I guess that's why they're called Spoilers.
Hmm, imagine that.
So without further ado, Review!

Pros:
Wow, where to start. first thing I'll say is this movie is the much needed return to form for the X-men Franchise. After the Two Brilliant beginning movies in Xmen 1 and 2, the series took a really dramatic left turn, deciding to instead focus on extraneous characters after extraneous character. X3 had tons and tons of useless characters and they killed off many of the good and useful ones.
Then came X-men origins Wolverine. say what you want about this one, it had some good moments and some bad moments (the merc without a mouth...but with laser beam eyes) overall it failed almost completely.
From there we got First class. Overall i liked the new cast, McAvoy, Fassbender and Lawrence were great but every other character was unneeded. Darwin, angel, Ice Bitch from Mad Men, Red Nightcrawler, Bacon. They all felt like cheap action figures. no-one was remotely intriguing or consequential in the overall movie.
Last year we got The Wolverine. I genuinely Loved the wolverine up until the gigantic robotic Samurai. and I was very interested in seeing where Wolverine and Yukio go.
That all being said DOFP felt like a movie in a completely different league. it felt like the series was finally grabbed by it's reigns and pulled back on the course it should be on. Bryan singer (love him or hate him) has done a wonderful job steering the series back in the direction it should go. This one had tons of humor, tons of emotional character moments and plenty of fun bits to look at.
Overall the Movie was expertly directed, all of the actors did a pretty good job in their roles, with McAvoy, Lawrence and Jackman as the standouts to me. The movie was very well paced from beginning to end and unlike another superhero movie lately never felt cheesy. It consistently pushed the story forward instead of tacking on unneeded bad guys to try and set up the next movie.
The special effects, as always, were amazing, the Sentinels both in their future versions, and their past versions, were very cool. I personally loved the chameleon like Sentinels in the future. The way their faces unfolded to blast the heat rays were awesome, and the fact that they were intelligent on top of formidable was a very nice sight.
Out of all of the mutants I have to admit, Blink was my favorite. Ok, I know what some of you are thinking. "it's just cause she's Asian, and you still have Yellow Fever" Well, maybe I do, but no, I loved the fact that she was basically playing a version of super elaborate Portal. being able to fire a portal into the air so that Colossus could jump through and then firing him out of a wall was a very neat trick.
the fighting in this one was top notch and always felt inventive. Mystique was insanely graceful, yet oddly sexy, in a walking bluescreen kind of way. Lawrence found a way to bring a lot of character into an otherwise characterless character.
And let's not forget the ultimate scene stealer. Quicksilver. He was a total blast. from his first scene in his basement to the Pentagon break out. he was a whole lot of fun. The slow motion scene was brilliant. just casually walking around, dicking with everybody, basically doing what clockstoppers wishes it could do, but making it look good. I can't wait to see him in the next one.
Oh, they also Killed off the dumb extraneous characters from first class! Yay!
Cons:
Before I get to a more general discussion I had a few gripes. first off a lot of the characters outside of Past Xavier, Past Magneto, mystique, Logan, and Beast were underused. I know they couldn't all be used but I was actually really interested in how Shadowcat developed the ability to send Logan back into the past. Why wasn't that Professor X doing that? since when can Shadowcat, who's only power up til now was running through things, magically send people back in time?
And did Beast really create the mutant cure in the 70's? the one that was such a huge deal in X3?
I have one major Gripe/complaint but I'm going to open that one up so I'm not putting it in just cons or pros.
General Thoughts:
So, let's talk about what this movie does for the series. This movie now paints a timeline that completely writes out the past 6 movies. (xmen origins wolverine is still probably possible for some of it).
The last scene before the credits reveals that mystique takes wolverine. whether this would have originally been Stryker taking him in order to put him though the weapon X program I'm not sure. This leaves the question about his adamantium an issue. Does he have adamantium in the new future? did stryker end up catching him years later and doing it again? even though logistically that Logan would recognize stryker and not volunteer for the program. going forward Logan should hypothetically have bone claws unless Magneto gives him adamantium.
Also. the end of The Wolverine had Logan with bone claws again after getting his cut off by the abomination samurai. yet in the future scenes in this he has his metal claws back. how? Could have used a small throw away line about them.
What does this movie mean for the original trilogy? has any of that happened? in this new timeline where Jean and Scott are back alive, and rogue is with bobby, and has A white stripe in her hair, and professor X is alive. where does this leave all of the events from those movies?
The first movie was set around Magneto trying to take out new york. or Mutate them all. Wolverine would logistically remember him from before. and he wouldn't have adamantium claws so Magneto would have no control over him.
Yet the filmmakers kept in Rogue's White stripe, which happened when she was forced to power Magneto's giant machine. So that says it did happen. unfortunately I call it a plot hole.
Next up is X2. this one completely revolves around logan's relationship with stryker. yet Logan would know and remember stryker up. so he wouldn't have ever volunteered for weapon X, and the whole main storyline of X2 would never have happened.
And obviously X3 never happened because Scott and jean are back. so x3, gone. Which also means that The Wolverine, gone, he left for Japan because he was grieving for Jean. he'd have no reason to go if she didn't die.
This is actually a big let down for me. Sure it fixed all the problems but this movie basically just throws all of the previous films in the trash and starts again. Only First class actually feels like it belongs in the same timeline as where the series is now.
Shame, I was really looking forward to seeing Yukio return. damn.
So where does it go from here? Apocalypse. I know basically nothing about the Age of Apocalypse storyline. so I have no idea where it's headed, but the final teaser after the credits was really cool. I'm excited for an xmen movie for the first time in a long time.
Final Verdict: 95
Overall i really Loved the film. but It's going to take me a bit to get over the fact that it just destroyed the rest of the movies in the series.
So now to get some sleep before I see it again tomorrow morning!
