Movie Review 90: Transcendence

Welcome Back!

So, it's the start of a pretty long night, lots of little things to do before Midwest Media Expo tomorrow. Not really sure what to expect but some random Frivolities will be had.

If you're reading this and You're going to the Expo let me know. (comments work perfectly) otherwise if you run into me at the Expo say Hi! I always like running into readers.

 - Smash cut to Car accident -

Well, maybe not like that.

Anywhoosles, I just got back from another movie. This time the Wally Pfister Helmed Sci-Fi flick Transcendence. I'll go into it in more detail in the review.

Speaking of which, Review! I have to pepper in plenty of spoilers so beware.

Movie Review: Transcendence

Pros:
Wally Pfister is one of the best Cinematographers in Hollywood today. He doesn't disappoint in that respect. the movie has some really creative shots and beautiful images, just what you'd expect from a World Renowned Director of photography.

Moving on from the images, let's take a look at the actors. I've always liked Paul Bettany. He's been a favorite of mine since Knights tale. He had a very juicy role in this and when he's on screen he kills it. Kill as in good. Johnny depp is well reserved and not his clowny self he's devolved into lately. Rebecca hall does a fine job and the rest of the cast does a pretty decent job as well.

Overall the story kept me interested all the way through and even though it's extremely slow paced I never felt bored. The film takes it's time unfolding and that's not always a bad thing.

Cons:
For a movie about higher intelligence and super computing it sure does make a whole lot of logic flaws.

For example near the end there's the line "I can either Heal her or Upload her, i can't do both, not enough power and not enough time"...Bullshit! At this point he's controlling millions and millions of Nanobots and is in every single power source on the planet. Yet he can't upload one brain and heal one body? hell shut down google for a second and use their power. or disconnect from a few of your militia drone guys and do it. He had plenty of power, hell you can even say 'wait for a minute' and remake your solar power rigs, It doesn't take much power to upload a brain. you did the same on a generator in an abandoned building in the beginning of the movie!

going on from there there were a lot of scenes with 'technical mumbo jumbo' like Bettany saying "I created that algorithm, I can write a virus that infects it" Ok, a Super intelligent computer has had 2 (or 3, or however long this was supposed to span) to revise code, I highly doubt he was using your code still. besides, did you put in that code when you first booted him up? you were expecting the computer to make nanobots? I don't care if you have the "boot code" he went through and rewrote his code as one of the first things he did. so Bettany's code is definitely no longer there.

Why did all of the Drone Men pick up heavy objects just to walk out of frame? I can see Tendo lifting one to fix a solar panel, Ok, that one seems realistic. (even if the 'video leaked footage' was from the point of view of Rebecca Hall, not the kid on a moped) but later on you see a man pick up a Washing machine and walk off screen with it, but is then never seen again. is he going to hit someone with it? even though the next scene was the man, as Johnny Depp, saying they won't kill anyone. But that mane with the washing machine was sure thinking about it.

There are many more little nitpicks like that. The movie had hundreds of little logic flaws and inconsistencies, I love wally Pfister as a cinematographer but he needs to work on his directing.

Final Notes:
It's a decent movie, but it makes you think. which makes you start analyzing it, which makes you start deconstructing it.

FINAL VERDICT: 54
Decent Idea and acting, but the writing and pace drag it way down.

So now off to get ready for The Expo, Till it be later!
