Movie Review 82: How I Live Now

Hey!

Welcome Back to the Blog of Movie Reviews, and the occasional Randomness. I'll stick with the Movie Review theme for this update.

I just finished up the Saoirse Ronan flick How I Live Now. I call it a flick, yet it's almost exactly what I'd consider a 'Film'. Dark, Brooding, Difficult to watch. Well, time to Review!

MOVIE REVIEW: How I Live Now

Pros:
First off, I still love Saoirse Ronan. She's a Wonderful young actress. She first popped onto my radar because of Atonement, which got her an Oscar nom. How I Live Now is another great subtle performance, almost too subtle at times. She was able to carry a rediculously slow paced movie almost solely by herself. She;s done it before in Hanna but that at least had action to break up the emotional scenes. Thisone was all her, in actress mode the whole time.

I may bash on the Somber tone a bit, but I absolutely loved it, it was dark and bleak and never let up throughout the course of the movie. I especially like that the movie wasn't afraid of killing characters. The neighbor's death took me completely by surprise. And I was completely engrossed in the scene with the pile of bodies. I cannot express enough how good the tone held up throughout the movie. it reminded me of Children of men, without the unique camera shots.

Cons:
Well, With a slow pace comes a slow pace. It worked for the movie but it was insanely slow at times. It reminded me of some of the slow indie movies you'd see at a film festival.

Ok, the Big Elephant in the movie is the really weird relationship that pops up between a pair of cousins. I understand they are not blood related in the book, but in the movie they're cousins. and they fall in love, have sex, all that jazz. It's a very weird decision to make them an actual relationship instead of perhaps just a close family bond. It would have been a bit more believable to me.

Final Verdict: 75
Good Acting, and somber, but a bit shallow at times.

ok, so that's up, now to shoot things!
