Hello!
Welcome back yet again. I've spent most of the day Assembling an Oscar Prediction list. so Prepare for that. But in the meantime I have a review of Carrie for you to read! I had meant to see this in theatres but I missed it, just got it on DVD today so figured, why not?
Pros:
I love Stephen King. His first novel, Carrie, was a brilliant piece of horror fiction. somehow blending the balance of adolescent awkwardness and interesting Telekinetic shenanigans, and of course horror and bloodshed. none of the films have yet to get that great balance and the complex characters that the novel had.
that being said, I enjoyed the take this movie took. I like Chloe Grace Moretz, even in some of her not so great films.
other than that the movie didn't have many high points. Judy Greer's from livonia? yeah!
Cons:
The acting was horrible. all of the girls seemed like High school children in a play. the Girl who played Chris was terrible. she always seemed to be waiting for her turn to talk then overacted her lines when she had to. Julianne Moore was lazy as the mom. she was ok at times but otherwise it almost seemed like she wasn't trying at all.
The other huge problem I had with it was the way they did the Telekinesis. I like some of the effects, like the breaking mirror and some other little things. but then there are obvious CGI effects and Moretz Flailing around randomly.
Why is it that in both Carrie and Let Me In Moretz has to over the top the supernatural Items. I love when Telekinesis is done subtly. like a person so zoned out that you don't know what they'll do. or just locking eyes and the world around crumbling, not flailing her arms as something rolls out at you. It seemed like a lazy way of covering up a low budget movie.
also, in the book she kills every single person in that gym room. blood everywhere and flames. in this the boy is hit by a bucket, she accidentally sets a girl on fire, then is magically outside. sure she kills a couple more in a car, and her mother of course, but that's it, total of 4 people killed by Carrie in her massacre. I'd equate this to some of the school shootings recently where one person is injured and they call it a rampage, but I wont. this movie had the potential of a really brutal finale and all we got was a person flailing around.
Final Notes:
I love the book. and I hear the original is amazing, I've seen it before and wasn't impressed. but this one just felt lazy and poorly assembled.
Final Verdict: 27
Good story, bad everything else
Now onto either another movie or my prediction list, later suckas!
