Welcome Back!
Since I'm in a martial arts type of mood, I figured why not make a list of my Top 10 Favorite Martial Artists.
A few Restrictions,
1. Have to perform their own stunts and fighting. this eliminates most of the american actors who fight.
2. have to have more than one movie with fighting.
3. must be hand to hand or melee fights, guns are aloud but not as the main weapon in a fight.
4. any form of martial arts is fair game, from Wushu to wrestling.
So, without further ado, let the list commence! (i'm adding a sample fight from each person i pick as well
Top 10 Favorite Martial Artists
10. Collin Chou
First Noticed him as Seraph in The Matrix Reloaded (yes, i liked it, except for the ending, ergo its irreparably flawed) but Colin Impressed me. he made appearances in other films like Flashpoint, Forbidden Kingdom (Hated this one) and Fearless but Matrix is still my favorite
9. Michelle Yeoh
Actually a very highly trained Dancer, Michelle Yeoh has made quite a name for herself as a Martial artist as well. using her dancing talent and grace as her main weapons. I picked her over Ziyi Zhang (my favorite actress) because I see Yeoh as more of a Martial artist, having been in Crouching tiger, Supercop, and Tomorrow Never Dies
8. Cyril Raffaelli
More known as a Fight Choreographer, Cyril Raffaelli is a Karate and Wushu master. he also is rather proficient in Parkour. being good friends with the Founder, David belle. they collaborated on District B13. complete with some of the best paced chase scenes and acrobatic fight scenes on film. not bad for a Frenchman
7. Ray Park
I can guarantee you, you've seen him in something, either as Darth Maul, or Toad in X-men. Started as a Stunt man in Mortal Kombat Annhilation. now he plays Snake eyes in the GI Joe series. He's widely under-appreciated as both an actor and a martial artist but he's pretty solid to me
6. Donnie Yen
Right now He's considered the top Martial artist on the planet. with a masterful job as Ip Man (Bruce Lee's mentor) Yen has supplanted himself as one of the best actors out of the martial artists.
5. Jet Li
Everyone knows Jet Li. The legendary Chinese Wushu master. He's been acting for Decades and only recently has he started slowing down, 'retiring' multiple times from various types of films, but always coming back. For most of his career he'd do full contact fighting and he's actually a pretty decent actor, as seen in Unleashed, my personal favorite.
4. Stephen Chow
Normally a Comedian, he enjoys mixing very weird visuals with highly kinetic fight scenes. Often resulting in just completely weird fights. I would have loved him to be Kato in the Green Hornet, he was signed on to direct for quite a while before ultimately dropping out.
3. Iko Uwais
Relatively new to the world of movies, but he was absolutely amazing in The Raid. He practices a Silat. a very showy and super High energy fighting style. most of it is about deflection then brutal attacks.
2. Tony Jaa
I've loved tony Jaa since I first saw Ong Bak. that and The Protector have solidified him as one of the most acrobatic action stars on the planet. the 5 minute long continuous take fight scene in The Protector was one of the longest and most complex ever made. and I love it.
1. Jackie Chan
Was there any Doubt? Jackie Chan is hands down the best martial artist out there. he may not be the best actor, but he could kick your ass and make you laugh while doing it. called the Buster keaton of our era, he's an extremely physical comedian and always plays characters that are defensive, never striking first. and his very unique blend of comedy and action make his movies, even the horrible ones, (and there are a few...) fun to watch. I go to any movie he's in and collect any I see on DVD. he's a master at his art and hope he can go on being awesome for many more years.
heal so just won 'most stunts by an actor' from the guinness book of world records.
- Honorable Mentions -
Bruce Lee
- Great Fighter, and good showman, just not a huge fan like so many others
David Belle
- The Founder of Parkour and Other lead In District B13, not enough movies to warrant the list
Jason Statham
- Very Good, and a Brawler, but ultimately didn't make the list.
Dwayne 'the Rock' Johnson
- Not really a martial artist, but such a fun actor
- Old, Over the Hill, Way the hell overrated -
Chuck Norris
Ok, so that's my list. Agree? Disagree? What's your list? Tell me in the comments below. and click follow if you like the lists.
