Ohayo!
Welcome back. I should write these in Japanese...That'd be interesting, like do a japanese version and an english one
Anyway, I just finished up Whisper of the Heart, yet another Ghibli movie i had never heard of. and yet again, i wasn't disappointed. So far they've all been amazing. well, except Yamadas, that was just weird.
Rebyu!
Pros:
again, the animation is amazing. This one was much more realistic than most of the ones recently. set in mid 90's Tokyo, it follows a young girl (surprise!) as she tries to find herself. it was a very sweet movie. reminded me of From up on Poppy Hill for a lot of it, the young self conscious girl has to try and find herself. it worked really well, I found myself interested in this girl and her maybe possibly boyfriend.
The story took its time unfolding, bringing in new characters as the story went on and ultimately resolved almost all of the plotlines. I really enjoyed it.
I really enjoyed all of the insight into japanese culture, and how you have to take entrance exams for various schools and how japanese schooling works. also the touches of her uniform changing halfway through, showing progression of time, that's the kind of stuff I love to see, I love to learn about foreign culture and Japan is at the top of my list right now. Can I study abroad in Japan? Please???
The baron would be a really cool cosplay. I'm just saying.
Cons:
Well this is more a technical issue than anything else but my Subtitles cut out after about 20 minutes (17:35 to be exact) so I was forced to listen to the Dubbed version. Brittany Snow played the main character (who's name I never got to learn, problem of not having subtitles.) she's from like Hairspray and Pitch Perfect and the Pacifier, also Ashley Tisdale played the friend and such....yeah, it wasn't horrible it just knocked me out of the movie from time to time. I might buy the Blu Ray and watch it with subtitles.
Also I didnt really like the final scene. It might have been a dubbing issue moreso than the writing but the final line of "I LOVE YOU!" was just way too out of character. The boy was seen as very subdued through the whole movie but he breaks character at the end and yells it to her from like a foot away? he'd be more of a 'i love you.." then hold her kind of guy. he's also a little creepy. I mean, checking out tons of books just so a girl notices him? and walking by her and sitting next to her....creeper!
FINAL VERDICT: 90
Beautiful movie, and very moving, but I'd rather have watched it in japanese.
Only 6 movies remaining!
Laputa
Gave of the Fireflies
Kiki's Delivery Service
The Cat Returns
