TV Season Review: The Wire, Season 1

Yo!

Just finished up the first season of The Wire, Yes I know I'm behind the times by a few years, or over a decade, but I really liked the show.

After much pressure from friends and coworkers I figured I'd cave and give it a shot.

Well, I'll just jump into the review and spare you the brain ramblingnesses

TV SEASON REVIEW: The Wire: Season 1

Story and Characters:
Basically it breaks down into two different storylines, the cops, and the criminals. Personally I found the criminals storyline as a more intriguing story. The whole morality of D'angelo and the turmoil of Wallace and the lower level guys in the group was great. The only real issue I had with the Criminal side is I never once saw Avon Barksdale as the leader of the gang. I mean, seriously, Idris Elba as the second in command? Hell no. He was the kingpin for me, you cant have one of the best and most underrated actors on earth be the second in command. I look forward to seeing his power grow as the series goes on.

The cop side was good as well, but ultimately I wasn't as interested, I've seen tons of cop shows on tv. corrupt cops, wannabes, rogue cops. they're all in other shows, the thing that works the best though is the camaraderie and chemistry between the individual characters. It took me most of the season to remember names but I started to really like Greggs (lesbian) and Freamon (pawn shop). I liked how they dealt with the CI's and the way the wire taps worked. I enjoyed seeing the old technology, it felt novel. back then it probably wouldn't have.

The other characters, bubbles and Omar were both well played. I liked Omar as a renegade type guy and Enjoyed seeing him get revenge, or at least trying to. Bubbles was a frustrating character, I never really like seeing junkie characters, but he was oddly endearing throughout the season, and his last line 'Dont tell her' pretty much summed up his whole season arc.

Acting:
The acting was very good on most of the characters. a lot of the criminals felt real, and probably are honestly. the cops felt like they belong, some characters here and there were annoying, like the fat white brown noser, but they were played well.

one guy who I just cant look at without critiquing is Lance Reddick as Daniels, I only see Abaddon from Lost. and what's with his walk, its almost comical sometime. he's a weird dude.

Personally I cant stand mcnulty, its more because his character annoys me than anything else.

Aspect Ratio:
It's in 4:3, I hate 4:3, I know it's  not that long ago that was the TV standard but I hate it nowadays.

FINAL VERDICT: 86
Really liked the show, but it feels slightly dated but it sets up for a potentially amazing series

Season 2 will most likely be up next week, i'll be watching Da Vinci's Demons and Grimm at the same time, with a Breaking Bad Final season Review on Sunday and Glee starting up tomorrow.

Let me quickly rant about Glee. the fifth Season starts tomorrow. the Fourth season comes out on DVD next tuesday, Who the hell decided that? the whole point of releasing the DVD is to drum up interest for the next season. who dropped the ball on this date configuration? I understand it might be for a Cory Montieth thing on the DVD but I'd just put it on the 5th season DVD paired with the Memorial episode...come on Fox, get your head out of your asses
