Hello!
Yay addicting TV! It's been a year since I last watched Supernatural. I forgot how much I love this show. It's fun, it's not an award worthy show but I have a lot of fun with the characters and the odd dark humor.
This Time I've decided to try out a new Tv review format, I feel set on my Movie review format but I'm not all that happy with my Season reviews yet. I'll try this format, I'll be doing the same for Under the Dome next Monday.
Anyway, I'm going Episode by Episode this time, pointing out how I liked each one and what I didn't like, then I'll do a wrap up at the end of the Review.
Let's do it!
- Warning Series Spoilers ahead -
Episode 1: We Need to Talk about Kevin
Season Premiere! This Episode was pretty strong, and I liked how they didn't spend a ton of time on Sam's 'relationship', yeah they focus on it quite a bit over the next few weeks, but this one it just felt like more of a 'it happened' lets do story now' type of thing. I also like Kevin as a character. and Benny seems pretty cool.
Episode 2: What's up Tiger Mommy?
Besides the dumb move of going back to your home when you're the most wanted guy on earth. But It brought a great new character in Kevin's mom. I overall enjoyed the episode. I loved all of the little myth references in the Auction, especially Thor's hammer. I kinda wish they kept that around.
Episode 3: Heartache
This felt like the first Filler episode of the Season, That being said Filler episodes are always fun, this one wasn't anything special. Guy's cursed body parts are making people rip out hearts. nothing special, moving on.
Episode 4: Bitten
Chronicle and Werewolves mixed together. The Found Footage handicam style was fine and I like the basic idea of following a werewolf transforming. But the 3 characters were annoying and there wasn't enough Sam and Dean. but the scenes where Sam and Dean appear in are cool.
Episode 5: Blood Brother
First off, I like Benny. He's a cool character and I enjoy the conflict of him being a vampire. and I like him as an ally. So I really enjoyed that storyline of the episode. but on the Flipside Sam and his ex are never going to get back together so I'm a little tired of the flashbacks already.
Episode 6: Southern Comfort
ah Garth, I like garth, and seeing him Become Bobby is fun. I wish they'd use him a bit more but he's fun for these freak of the week filler episodes.
Episode 7: A Little Slice of Kevin
And Castiel is back! I love Castiel, he is a bad ass, and seeing him with the Blue eyes and the badass attitude is always fun. I loved the scene between him and Crowley. I can't wait til they have a full on brawl. also its cool to see the other potential Prophets as well.
Episode 8: Hunteri Heroici
One of my Favorites of the year. I love all of the weird Random Looney toons references. It was a lot of fun and I love when Supernatural just has a fun episode. even if it doesn't have much to do with the overall storyarc.
Episode 9: Citizen Fang
I'm amazed this one was so early in the series. I enjoyed it, but ultimately it wasn't all that memorable.
Episode 10: Torn and Frayed
SAVE THE WIENER GUY! yeah I like the wiener guy. I also liked the idea of Angels being nothing more than programmable robots. it's an interesting concept to me.
Episode 11: LARP and the Real Girl
Felicia Day! I'm a huge Felicia day Fan and she always makes the episodes fun. this one in particular had all sorts of references and jokes that I loved. and kinda being a LARPer made it more fun. (don't judge me interwebs)
Episode 12: As Time goes By
Finally a show changing episode. the Series hasn't had any real shake ups in quite a while and Introducing Sam and Dean's Grandfather, for one episode only, and the 'men of letters' and Abaddon (I still thin tall bald black guy) is a cool addition. I like the idea of underground societies and I think Supernatural could do it justice.
Episode 13: Everybody Hates Hitler
Well, Wasn't quite what I was hoping for when I read the title but it was fun Wish the Golem would have done more. he has some potential and I'd like to see him return in later episodes as a Tank. otherwise, lackluster episode.
Episode 14: Trial and Error
I like the idea, but the choice in the rich Texas family's house was a bit shrug worthy. I would have liked a darker location personally. The glasses seeing the hellhounds sounded a bit far fetched, I mean, 8 seasons and only now they know that trick? but Sam doing the trial was cool and I welcome the problems thatll cause. (why cant Dean just do it too?)
Episode 15: Man's Best Friend with Benefits
Another one of those Forgettable mid season filler episodes.
Episode 16: Remember the Titans
PROMETHEUS! My favorite Greek Titan finally gets Supernatural love. the Episode started well, and I instantly picked u the Eagle eating his liver thing, but then it became a family story. It felt like a bit of a cop out and Zeus should really pose more of a threat. I mean, he is practically God to Grecians.
Episode 17: Goodbye Stranger
Meg's back. cool. hasn't she died like 6 times now? but whatever, I like Rachel Miner as an actress. it's cool to see her back...oh never mind, she's dead, again. Though the reveal of Naomi controlling Castiel was cool and the scene with Castiel beating the hell out of Dean was good. kinda soul crushing, but good.
Episode 18: Freaks and Geeks
oh, it's xmen meets supernatural. damn. the episode felt a bit too convoluted. Dean spent the whole episode telling the girl not to be a hunter, but then Reneges and decides she's a hunter at the end? um OK...
Episode 19: Taxi Driver
This episode had a whole lot of Potential. it's all Sam going to hell to save Bobby's Soul. then on the way back u he's in Purgatory and he gets help from Vamp Benny. but, it feels like a 2 hour episode crammed into one. they shoulda had a lot more of Sam on his quest. it almost seemed too easy. he pops into purgatory, wanders, kills a vampire, finds the portal to hell, wanders in hell, finds Bobby, who's relatively fine. then they waltz out of hell, back to purgatory, then get chaperoned back to earth. it took them a lot longer to find ways to get into hell earlier in the series, now theres a taxi driver doing it for free? (he mentions, 'itll be costly', then just lets Sam in) its a great premise with not enough time to pay off
Episode 20: Pac-Man Fever
Felicia Day! Again! another Day episode huh? uh OK, kinda odd that they have two in a season, but Alright, I'm okay with that. it was a decent episode, the 'coma mother' storyline is relatively Cliche but it worked. and I enjoyed the humor, and Djinn's are some damn cool creatures.
Episode 21: The Great Escapist
Kevin's had some weird evolution this season, he started meek and weird and now he's a strung out badass...nice. when did Crowley put him in the Truman show? and oh, metatron is a nerdy old man? OK. I was expecting a transformer who talks to the camera. I like Castiel teleporting between identical locations, the effect wasn't that great but I liked the idea. a stab at America.
Episode 22: Clip Show
yay they brought back 3 old faces no one remembers, Cool I guess, but the better part of the story was the set up for the finale.
Episode 23: Sacrifice
As Supernatural Finale's go, this one was rather strong, not as good as Castiel becoming God or them opening the gates of hell and letting everyone out. but I enjoyed it. I liked Crowley in chains and Abadon vs Crowley was cool. Castiel losing his 'angel essence' feels temporary but I like the idea. and Metatron becoming a primary villain could be interesting, even though I still want God to be the big villain in a coming season. hows that for blasphemy. The part I really disliked was Sam and Dean giving up on the Demon Door. I mean Yeah it keeps the show open for further Demon storylines but they spent all season leading up to Dean changing his mind....
oh, and Angels falling from the sky? Badass. I bet theyll be sent back up in the season premiere.
In Closing:
I liked the season and it's still a great show I just feel like the finale pulled a lot of punches and Taxi Driver needed to be 2 episodes. I'm eagerly awaiting the Premiere in a few weeks, but I don't watch this when it's on tv, (I hate commercials) so It'll be a year before I review Season 9
Final Verdict: 79
Solid Season, but pulled punches to often.
Next Up, barring any Movie reviews, is Newsroom's season Finale on Sunday then Under the Dome's Finale on Monday, that one will be full of sarcasm...so much sarcasm.
So I cast You all out! go about your Lives! or follow me! your choice
