Movie Review 9: Pacific Rim

Nihao!

So I just saw Pacific Rim, and as I predicted, it was Amazing, but like every movie, it has it's faults. Now I'll take a thorough look at it, as a filmaker, a Del Toro fan, a Rinko Kikuchi fan, and a Giant Robot fan.

Without further ado, time to Review!

MOVIE REVIEW: Pacific Rim

Pros:
First and Foremost, the Effects, they were spot on, some of the best effects I've seen in a movie in a very long time. they're what are drawing most of the people into the theatre, and they're the coolest thing in it. the Kaiju all have very cool looks and look very different from one another. they all stand out and were really cool. the Jaegers all reminded me of Anime Mechas like Evangelion, Reideen, Gundam, and yeah, i guess a little transformery. (notable when Striker eureka or Gipsy Danger pulled out the swords like Optimus Prime does in TF2, or, 3, or whichever)

Surprisingly my favorite part personally was not the giant robots and aliens....it was the concept of melding 2 people together in a sort of mind lock called the drift. think a vulcan Mind Meld. The toll it takes on both Mako Mori and Raleigh was very interesting to me. and the writers adding this concept into the film instantly gave it a lot more humanity, especially between the pilots.

the fact that Mako and raleigh instantly become bonded but dont seem to just end up as a couple was interesting. their relationship never felt like a forced love interest type and that was good. i like when a male and female pairing can be close but not particularly in a couple sort of way, not saying they won't end up together in the sequel, that's almost guaranteed anyway.

anyway, the fact that all of the pilots felt expendable was good also, they had a hard job and they never felt like they were at all indestructible. a problem so many hollywood movies have

Cons:
Every movie has flaws, this has a few. the first being that all the action was set at night and in the rain. now it looked cool but just once i wanted to see the effects of the kaiju and jaeger battle in the daylight

also, the two scientists motor mouthed so fast that half of their dialogue i missed, but that might just be me. and Mako's Accent was a tad strong sometime, bt since Rinko Kikuchi cant speak much enlgish in real life, i don't hold this against her.

Cast:
the cast was great, especially Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi. of course i think i just have a crush on her. and any asian girl with Blue highlights is cute to me.

HE PUNCHED THE HIGHLIGHTS OUT OF HER HAIR!

anyway, the rest of the cast did a good job, idris elba Chief among them, he played a good Ranking officer and i was never quite sure how his character would react. and for someone who's seen thousands of movies that's refreshing

Production Design:
New category, but i have to give a shout out, the sets in this movie were great, the Heads of the jaegers, though at times felt like a stage, i didnt quite believe they were actually in there. anyway, the whole feel of the movie was great. thats one thing Del Toro always does so well is Set Design and General Art Direction.

Wardrobe:
another new Category, but to whoever designed those Pilot Suit, i want one, or two, please? if not i'll just have to make one, and get a cosplay drift partner.

Direction:
Well of course i'd need to Give a big pat on the back to Del Toro. yet again he amazes me with his creativity. this guy is one of my favorite directors on the planet, second only to Edgar Wright. Both directors have yet to direct a movie i haven't liked, Keep it up. and Hire me please!

Last words:
I loved this movie, i was thoroughly entertained and i loved how much humanity there was wrapped into it. great summer movie and im looking forward to the sequels, after hellboy 3 of course.

Final Vedict: 98
Loved the movie all the way through, congrats to all involved

so there you have it, i'm going to turn on Babel or Map of the sounds of Tokyo. no reviews of those because i've already seen both, but expect another review soon. seeing Pacific rim again tomorrow in IMAX 3D.

Now that im free of distractions i'm going to Devote some time to my Isaac Costume, so look for some progress updates over the next few days.

Tickets to the TCFF festival go on sale on Sunday so Laura and i are headed up there to get her tickets, (i already got mine, being a sponsor and all)

if you are still reading this, leave a little comment to let me know you made it this far, i'm always curious who reads this.

anyway, thanks for reading and i'll see y'all tomorrow!

Edit - So apparently Being reminded of Evangelion because the movie had giant mechas is a problem, well, tough, the giant mechas remind me of the giant mechas....so stop bitching, i'm not saying he ripped off evanglion, im saying he was obviously inspired by those types of shows...
