Movie Review 188, Star Wars The Force Awakens (Spoiler Free)

Star Wars
The Force Awakens

Before I get too far into this review, I have to state that I am majorly avoiding spoilers. I'll be doing another review later, perhaps a video review. that one will be filled with spoilers. This one though, is spoiler free.

I went into this movie with high hopes, extremely high hopes. The highest hopes I've ever had for a movie. Ultimately, It didn't quite reach those expectations. It was a lot of fun, and had a whole lot of good scenes but as the movie goes on the decisions made by the writers and filmmakers started to become less interesting and just a bit too predictable.

The new cast was great. I particularly loved Rey and Finn, they had great chemistry from the first moment. I loved that Rey wasn't ever the 'damsel'. She always stood up for herself and managed to hold her own, even with the old cast. Finn gave us a very intriguing look at the First Order. He ended up being my favorite new character in the movie. The two of them were great.

Poe Dameron was also a really fun new character, even though theres a rather big gap where I wish they would have shown him a bit more. Perhaps a slightly longer version of the movie could show his quest. That being said he had a fun sense of humor as well.

The character i'm most interested in is Kylo ren. He's a total basketcase but he's fascinating. his backstory is given and is pretty well done. One of the best decisions to do is to actually take his mask off. This humanizes him a whole lot more than the imposing but robotic Darth Vader. Vader never was more than just a figure head. even with the soap opera attempt in the prequels. Kylo ren is a truly broken and fascinating.

Then theres Captain Phasma. She was Completely wasted in the movie. she looks cool but she never once showed any spine. I was eagerly waiting to see her performance but then, poof, she  never does anything of importance.

General hux is good, and he's good at speeches. even had a couple good little scenes with Kylo ren. that's all i can say about him.

i'll save my opinions of Snoke for my spoiler review.

Harrison for is back, and for the first time in what felt like decades, he's actually acting! he does a very good job returning as Han solo. even though his introduction felt just a little rushed. cant wait to see him in the future though.

Carrie fischer looks like she hasnt been in a movie since Return of the jedi. sigh.

After all these newcomers and returning vets, who was the one who stole the show? BB-8! that droid is awesome. the amount of emotion they were able to get out of a robot is on art with Wall-E. He felt like a complex and almost naive robot. unlike R2D2 who just seems a bit like a plot convenience.

The dialogue was pretty good, and overall i enjoyed the writing. the main issues i have are with the late movie writing, not dialogue but the decisions the filmmakers chose.

every other position was done amazingly well, Art department, special effects, sound, music, acting, directing, everything was top notch, its just the decisions late movie were annoying to me.

Overall i'ts one of my favorites in the series and I'll be seeing it again and again.

Final Verdict: 88
