TCFF 2015 Movie Review 13: The Last Five Years

The Last Five Years

It's very seldom that a musical pops up at the Film Festival. The only one I remember being here is Once, which is kind of a musical.

Well the last five years is a full on musical. And oh what a musical it is. It's a deeply intimate duet between two lovers, and that's all there is. The whole movie is just two people singing to and about each other. It's a lot better than it sounds.

Anna Kendrick continues to amaze me. She was decent in pitch perfect and ok in Into the woods (more about that later) but she was Mind-blowing in this. She was a powerhouse throughout. Either when she's shattered after the break up or unbelievably happy in the early relationship, she was a beacon and has never looked more beautiful.

Speaking of beautiful, the cinematography was amazing. This was one of the single most gorgeously shot films I have seen in a very long time. The various songs were almost completely one takes and the way the camera moved in and around the actors. There is a specific shot in the last ten minutes that focuses on Kendrick in a car singing at the boyfriend. I for the life of me have no idea how that shot was made.

This is the exact opposite of Into the woods. The cinematography in that was atrocious.

But never mind that, I love the Last Five Years

Final Verdict: 95
