Movie Review 166: Ant-Man

Ant-Man

I have to start off this review by explaining why I am so conflicted about writing this review.

This movie was originally Written and was supposed to be directed by Edgar Wright. I know, I've gone off on this topic multiple times in the past, But now that the movie is finally here, I have to reiterate. Edgar Wright is my Single Favorite director working today. Scott Pilgrim and Shaun are my top 2 movies of all time and World's End and Hot Fuzz are way up there as well. When I originally heard that there was this never heard of Hero who can talk to ants and shrink I wasn't interested. Then the announcement that Wright was to direct it instantly went to my most anticipated movie of the year.

Cut to a year ago or so, Edgar wright gets fired. Or walks away, lets face it, we'll never really know what happened. My interest plummeted. Then they brought in Adam Mckay, further plummeting.

Then they brought in the director of Yes Man and The Break Up. Wow, seriously? From one of the best directors to a guy who made a bomb and let Jim Carey Riff for two hours? Well goodbye hope and anticipation for this movie.

All that being said, I went into Ant-Man expecting a fun, and ultimately dumb, Thrill ride. I honestly was modestly surprised. it's a fun movie, with enough thrills and interesting ideas to get it by. Could it have been better? Of course. Did I expect more? Originally, yes, lately, no.

Setting aside my own predilections, I liked the movie. It's a bit ridiculous and seems just a little hollow but it's fun.

Paul Rudd was pretty good as Scott Lang. He's a good straight guy and I had a lot of fun with his little criticisms about stuff. I'm a little curious how long it took him to learn all the stuff with the suit and controlling the ants, it seemed like a while, yet the overall timeline couldn't be that long, so I'm a little stumped. Nevertheless, it assembled well overall.

Michael Douglas was good as Pym. He always plays a good genius with a chip on his shoulder. also makes me look at hearing aides in a new way.

Evangeline Lilly was decent, nothing altogether new for her, but she fit in pretty well.

Corey stoll was a bit one dimensional. He basically broad casted from the start that he was evil. and him being able to Vaporize people seems like something he could have used later. hmm, I wonder if the filmmakers forgot about that.

Michael Pena was, uh, fine? I guess. He was annoying at first and I warmed up to him but he had a few fast paced and edited scenes with him motor mouthing. Reminded me of a certain other director's style. a possible hold over perhaps? yet they didn't quite work. they were a tad too fast and the dialogue became jumbled.

I'll get into the certain Cameo's later.....

So story wise it was pretty run of the mill. Guy wants to create new type of super soldier. guy who originally made super soldier doesn't want to let it happen. hires other guy, who isn't remotely qualified. insert rousing training montage. New guy saves the day. stop me if you feel like you've seen it before.

One of my biggest gripes is over the actual big heist. So Pym needs Lang to get into the building, use his miraculous ants to use the sewer lines, to then get into the server room, to then fry the servers, to then get into this airtight little tube, and then blow everything up.

Yet ultimately Pym just strolls in and is in the room with the stuff you need. Why not just have Lang hitch a ride in a pocket? drop some ant bombs, and stroll out? or hell just have Pena do it. I mean This huge elaborate Heist was to steal a suit and blow everything up. just strap some bombs onto an ant fleet, send them in, and boom. win.

Couldn't Ant man just go in Stoll's mouth and punch his heart? is that not a thing he coulda done? sure woulda solved lots of problems.

Next on the chopping block, cinematography. I loved the 'micro vision' stuff, that was awesome. the rest just felt hastily put together. It wasn't a well shot movie. it felt like a comedy cinematographer trying to shoot an action movie. American comedy has a very bland shooting style. this fell into that when not in the action scenes.

3D, again, didn't add a damn thing.

So Yeah, this area is for the few cool spoilery scenes. first off, Yay Falcon get's something to do! It's nice to see him do something after getting shafted in Age of ultron. His Fight scene with Lang was fun. Him appearing later was cool, yet because of the Michael Pena Motor mouthing, I couldn't figure out what it meant.

Evangeline Lilly getting the new wasp suit....cool.

and The final stinger, well, Okay, I figured that would eventually happen. Can't have Bucky missing for too long. nice to see him reappear. who's Falcon's man? did I miss something?

 - END SPOILER SECTION -

So Yeah, anyway, I liked the movie. Could have been loads better and it suffers from a bit of a lack of depth. But it's fun. I surprisingly liked it

Final Verdict: 75
