Movie Review 163: Parallels

Parallels

Parallels was a random Netflix find I came across while trolling the ever expanding catalogue. It caught my eye because I once wrote a parallel dimension script and certain parts of the synopsis reminded me of it, and I needed something to watch in the background while doing some writing.

Anyway, Parallels is an odd little movie, very obviously a pilot of some kind to a TV show, but I liked it. It's the kind of Sci Fi I enjoy. At it's core it's just a fun little story, but the potential behind this is amazing.

Too bad you will never ever see this turned into any kind of series. It's a shame because I really ended up enjoying the characters and plot idea.

The characters were interesting, Ronan was the tough boxer, nothing I havent seen. Beatrix was the Quiet one, again nothing I havent seen. Harry was fun, but got annoying at times. The best character by far was Polly. She was also the most interesting, even though the twist at the end just kinda made no sense and felt like they were trying too hard to set up a sequel, or a series.

The crazy 'made a nuke' guy seemed completely out of place. he was in a backwater place but somehow ended up hacking a giant building TARDIS? Okay, sure, I'll chalk that up to bad writing.

Where were the random gun toting thugs from? why were they there a night at the beginning but daytime later? why was the dad in the building? was it their actual dad? I don't know, but I guess I never will.

I liked the movie, but it just had so much potential it never capitalized on.

Final Verdict: 50
