Movie Review 133: Automata

Welcome back everyone!

it's been another long break. Sigh, I guess I haven't been too into movies lately? Well I finished up a couple of TV shows but I haven't quite got around to reviewing them yet.

Anyway I just finished up the Antonio Banderas Sci-fi flick Automata. I really wanted to see it in theatres but it came and went so fast I never got a chance.

anyway, review time!

Movie Review: Automata

Pros:
I love the Cyberpunk feel of the first half of the movie. it felt almost Blade runner like and at times hit on some really cool topics. I liked the grittiness and dark feel of the city. I always love when theres a serious futuristic movie where the technology actually seems plausible.

I enjoyed how the Robots were realistic. quite often they're portrayed as hyper intelligent and fast, like I robot, but in this they are slow and beat up and aged. it may seem slow and boring but they were very much like Asimo will end up like in a decade.

I generally really like Antonio Banderas and he's gone downhill a lot over the past few years but I really liked him in this. He was a good vessel for the audience to see through.

I really loved the setting and the feel of this movie. hands down one of the more interesting movies this year.

Cons:
The last half was surprisingly lacking in the Art department and cool style department. It starts with a blade runner style but ends up as slow robots walking through the desert. I mean, i was still interested but it slowed way down from the great beginning.

I also completely lost when the mercenary group came into play. when did they get the wife? they just seemed a bit like a writer needing to add conflict instead of getting a truly original story.

Final Thoughts:
I rather liked this movie. it just seemed a bit too low budget for it's own good. It had some great themes and concepts but It lost steam and intrigue the farther it went. I wish it stayed in the city and a detective story instead of heading out into the desert.

Final Verdict: 72

Now to turn something else on!
