Hello!
I know! another review so soon after the Signal? Well I'll admit I watched the signal a couple nights ago, and I had written most of the review, but then got sidetracked, now I'm finishing up reviewing the movie I saw last night. Boxtrolls.
As with any review I do I feel the need to add a spoiler Tag, especially since my review will deal with some of the ending. but if you love Laika as much as I do, this won't be an issue.
Review:
Where do I start with this one? I've been a huge Laika fan since Coraline. they amazed me with that and amazed me with Paranormal but Boxtrolls was amazing. The visuals and the theme and style were astounding. I found myself in awes of this world they created. It was almost a steampunk world, and that is already fascinating to me. The fact that every single one of the trolls and the crazy creatures were brought to life one painstaking frame at a time is just mind-blowing. I found myself watching the characters trying to find errors in the animation, just to fill me in that these are puppets, but only a few times did it really stand out.
Laika has perfected the art of stop motion. I openly admit that Nightmare before Christmas is one of my favorite movies but this just makes that seem like a student film. Boxtrolls has the single best animation I have ever seen from this type of movie, ever.
I really enjoyed the characters in this one. I liked how the Trolls were named after the type of boxes they wore, Eggs, Fish, Shoe, Fragile, Oilcan, so on. they were all unique and lovable. The humans were just wretched and creepy. all along I was wondering what kind of nut jobs could design people like this, but then I realized, I'd design people like this. The odd proportions, the asymmetrically, it brought some great uniqueness to an already really unique movie.
but not everything was perfect. every once in a while it hit that 'holy crap, how is this a kids movie?' moment. The times Snatcher had his weird Cheese induced fits was kinda terrifying. and him ultimately exploding on camera was a huge shock. But Looking back the whole movie had a dark and very bleak tone and I can definitely see now that it's not a kids movie.
Also, why cheese? I mean, I love a good cheese, but this seemed to make cheese into a villain. I'm a bit confused why the villains whole life revolved around him catching boxtrolls so he can eat cheese...even though he's allergic.
Final Thoughts:
I loved this movie, and even though it's a lot darker than it's being advertised, I highly recommend you see it.
It also has the single best Fourth wall break I've ever seen in my life. They pull back from a scene to show the animator working on the puppets as they are talking about them not being in control of their own movement. it's an ingenious way to showcase the animation process, and it basically made the movie for my friend.
Final Verdict: 95
Brilliant movie all around, not really for kids.
Now to get some monies made!
