Movie Review: Edge of Tomorrow

Pros:
Oh where do I start? I absolutely loved this movie. The whole Groundhog Day concept is fantastic in the setting of a warzone. Doing the same thing over and over to improve yourself over the course of the same day is a very unique idea. I love how the 2D supporting characters actually grew too because of the way they reacted to Tom cruise over the course of the movie.

Moving on to Cruise. He gets a ridiculously bad rap lately. I honestly don't know why. yeah he may be a bit weird and quirky in real life, but who cares? He's a damn good actor. Whenever he does these big budget Action Sci-Fi's I find myself loving all of them, Oblivion last year was one of my favorites, and Minority Report is in my top 10 all time. He was great on screen, his evolution from charismatic but meek guy to downright badass at the end was great. Tom Cruise is one of my Favorite actors. this one's yet another great addition to his Resume.

Emily Blunt was really cool as Rita, she played the cold hard bitch character very well. I loved her toughness and also her weakness. She had a very multilayered character and over the course of the movie she got more and more likable. hard thing to do when you basically keep starting as the same character.

The Action was different than anything I've seen. The beach was a huge chaotic Clusterfunk. Which isn't easy to portray when you're main storyline is about repeating something over and over. The battle felt hopeless and impossible, especially since the Mimics bury beneath the ground.

I loved the mimics, they had a Sentinel type feel, yet they felt kinetic and fast. The way they'd just spin and take people out felt like a really cool design, and the underlighting on the metal bodies made them feel otherworldly. I'd love to get a model of the Alphas for my room.

Another great thing about this was the pacing, With this kind of concept you usually have that point where it begins feeling like the same thing over and over, but this one kept finding ways to push the story forward even with the looping nature of the story.

Cons:
My only real gripe I had with the whole movie was the ending. Now I know that when he kills an Alpha the Omega apparently resets it. ok, first off he kills an alpha the first day but then it resets and everything happens again. Why exactly didn't the omega change the loop? I mean the Alpha never dies again, but everything happens the exact same. Shouldn't the Omega have done it's job?

So that jumps us to the rather improbable idea that Brendan gleeson happens to have the 'show me the omega' device in his safe. Ok, I'll buy that but how does Rita know how to use it? they've never tested it. and the fact that he loses the looping ability right after that sure made it lucky that he happened to get the exact coordinates before he lost it...just saying.

Then we have the very end, Cage takes out the Omega (and an alpha, if that matters) and sinks into the omega as he dies. Then wakes up in the helicopter probably 6 hours before he usually does. why does he wake up then?did he get covered by the Omega's blood so now he's looping again? but this time from the Omega's start point instead of the Earlier alpha's? Did he break the cycle and the Mimics are dead? why was there a giant explosion in Paris if the giant explosion in Paris wouldn't have happened yet?

basically the whole Looping concept had some loop holes.

Also...I hate the Title, All You Need is Kill is so much better

Final Notes:
I absolutely loved this movie, It's one of the best Sci-fi movies I've seen in a long time, and maybe I'll repeat myself and see it again tonight.

FINAL VERDICT: 95
Amazing visuals and story, but a few odd loopholes and a headscratcher ending.

So, that's my 99th review, not exactly sure what my 100th will be, but it shall be glorious!
