Welcome back everyone!
I know, I know, I've been all quiet again. sorry, been busyish doing stuffs 'n things.
So I just walked out of Godzilla, the 2014 version since there are like 30 of them.
If you're worried about spoilers, you should be, cause they'll be here, not a whole lot of them, but yeah, spoilers!
Pros:
Overall I really enjoyed Godzilla. I loved the fact that for the most part it was from a human point of view. it never broke into just watching the monsters fight. the human characters were always integral to the scenes.
The director did a great job portraying the massive scale of the Creatures, yes creatures. I went into this knowing there were creatures other than Godzilla, but I purposely avoided hearing any more about them. I liked the MUTO's though. they had a unique look to them, and the red eyeless eyes gave them an almost Robotic feel.
Director Gareth Edwards (not Gareth Evans) is a surprising director. only a couple of movies under his belt and he already has the reigns on a 160 million dollar reboot. and he really pulled it off well. I liked the focus on the human elements instead of the monsters and the fact that it never went campy was good, so many of the old godzillas are almost so bad they're unwatchable.
Aaron Taylor-Johnson was good as Ford. he had a good on screen presence and did a pretty good job with his character.
Elizabeth Olsen just keeps getting more and more attractive. She didn't have a whole lot to do in this one, but she looked great.
Bryan cranston was the stand out in this, he was brilliant for all of his scenes. my only gripe is that he only lasts about half an hour. I wanted more!
Moving on to the effects, they were exquisite, I Loved the Muto Designs and the shots of the Halo jump or the falling planes, or basically any of the shots in the movie were just amazing.
Cons:
Ok, this on has a few cons. first off, Godzilla himself is a very bland character. he's a malevolent god type creature, and every movie he's ever in he comes in, beats up the other thing, takes off. He has no real motivation, and now that it no longer has the novelty of being a guy in a suit his Barney type build seems really old fashioned.
Personally I loved the Muto's designs but Godzilla himself felt just a little too corny. It was slow and lumbering, and we're supposed to think he's considered a savior at the end? yeah he killed the things, but are we really believing he didn't take out any buildings? It's like Superman in Man of Steel, he killed millions in metropolis just to kill one guy.
So yeah, Godzilla is a bit of an old and outdated concept, I'd love for him to be updated and oh god, speed him the hell up. He was so slow in the fights. Oh, and how does he just appear in behind things? He pulled a cloverfield and just popped up behind the Female Muto at the end just to Laser Blast him.
Next point. Where did the Laser blast come from? Yes yes I know it's in the original movies, but this one just came completely out of nowhere. this whole time he was realistic. there were no weird random things until, boom, Laser breath!
"You may want to lead with that one next time"
"yeah, sorry, it's a one off"
- Or -
Gypsy Danger's Sword
Final Notes:
Overall I really enjoyed this version, I just wish this was an original property instead of just a retread of an old and outdated character that could have died back in the 80's
Final Verdict: 82
Amazing visuals and direction, but godzilla needs to retire
So yeah, that's all done, now to find something else to do for a while! maybe some more borderlands since I finally have a borderlands partner again after the last one...well, yeah, anyway, Night all!
