Movie Review 83: 12 Years a Slave

Hello everyone

I know I usually start off these reviews with something ending in an exclamation point. but after watching 12 Years a Slave, I just can't muster an exclamation.

If you haven't heard of 12 Years a Slave, you are missing one of the most powerful movies of the year. It's excruciating to watch, whether that's good or not, i'm not sure. But it is extremely powerful.

I'll get onto the Review, but I'll warn you, there will be many many spoilers. so prepare yourselves for a spoilerific review!

MOVIE REVIEW: 12 Years A Slave

Pros:
Right off the bat, Chiwetel Ejiofor was astounding as Solomon. He was absolutely riveting all the way through. Subtle but still powerful. Solomon was a completely broken character, yet he was very strong. It's a brilliant portrayal, a polarized character.

Next up I have to hand it to Michael Fassbender. he played completely against his normal type of character. usually he plays a likable guy with flaws, like magneto for example. this time he was completely unlikable. It was hard to watch him most of the time because of this, I'm used to seeing him as a dark yet likable guy but in this I was never sure what he'd do, He's a great villain, with absolutely no sympathy or goodness to him.

And how can I not mention Lupita Nyong'o. the newcomer had an unbelievably hard role. she had to be happy and carefree at one moment and absolutely devastated in the next. She deserves her Oscar.

The rest of the cast did a damn good job. Especially the other slaves. all of them were believable and fit in the movie.

Ok, enough of the acting, let's talk about some technical stuffs. I noticed late in the movie (When Lupita is whipped) that scene went for a lot longer than I thought, playing out almost like a play instead of a series of shots. (Kinda like Gravity) it was an extremely impressive scene. the feelings the characters were going through were absolutely horrible.

Cons:
Ok, I know it's called 12 years a slave, but I honestly thought it took place over just a few months. there were no real identifiers for time passing. Solomon didn't develop any grey hairs, or any kind of notifiers. There were no change of seasons, or dialogue about length of times. It just felt like a short amount of time.

The only real shock was that his family ages by 12 years. He looked the same, haggard, but the same. and his family was very obviously different. it almost felt like they realized they had no time passage so the family was aged up to compensate.

and finally, It's a movie I really never want to watch again. It's extremely hard to watch. Solomon goes through hell, and you get to watch it all the way through. It's definitely not for everyone.

FINAL VERDICT: 89
Astounding acting, but lack of time progression makes it seem like a very short amount of time

So that's it! Time for sleep! I may edit this a bit tomorrow when i'm not to sleepy
