Hey everyone!
Welcome back! I'd overburden you with the awesomeness of my random rambling personality, but instead I'm just gonna jump right into my review!
This time it's the Brick Based Nostalgiafest, Lego!
Pros:
When I first saw this trailer I thought it looked pathetic. another excuse for the Danes to sell interlocking brick toys. Well as I walked out I realized, I love said Danish Interlocking Brick toys. I remember when I was younger I'd play with Legos for hours and hours. This movie brought back so many awesome, er, maybe not as awesome as I remember, Memories. I loved the references to all the different Kits. Including a Bionicle reference! and Technic!
The overall story is nothing we haven't seen before, but it's told in a way that feels original. the constant references to the 'real world' is great, like the Krazy Glue references. or the mispronounced X-acto knife. The writing had all sorts of cool little witty lines.
The animation was mind-boggling. I was honestly trying to figure out if it was stop motion animation or all Digital. The idea to have all the fire and the water and the random particles be actual Lego pieces was awesome. Made even better because I recognize all the pieces from when I was younger. I loved looking at the little touches, like the Piece numbers hovering next to the Pieces the master Builders were looking at.
Cons:
Some of the characters were underdeveloped. I really didn't like a lot of 'lord Business's' scenes. I'm not really sure what it was. The opening scene felt very poorly animated. and some of the Sea scenes were tough to watch because of the way the waves were animated
I didn't like Emmet as a character, they relied on his dumbness too often. just make him at least a little cleverer and I'd be happy.Batman had some iffy lines that just felt like topical throwaways.
I wish the movie went into more areas, I wanna see some of the weirder areas. just to see them. it'd be fun, maybe in a sequel.
Final Notes:
I don't have a whole lot of negatives. It's not the best movie I ever saw but it's sure an inventive as hell little film. It makes me want to get back into Lego. but since I've already gotten back into Magic. I just don't think I can devolve into my childhood any more.
FINAL VERDICT: 85
Cool animation and fun nostalgia, but now I want to build Legos
So now I'm off to make a Costume for tomorrow! Last minute I know, I suck at that. anyway, Later all y'alls!
