Good Morning World!
Well, It's probably more apt to say Evening considering I haven't slept yet, yay Insomnia! anyway I'm up at 5 in the morning to write a little review for you. Up this time the indie Dramedy The Spectacular Now!
I have some Cosplay posts to do as well but those will probably be for another day, perhaps tomorrow!
but for now, Review!
Pros:
this is an acting movie. the whole thing felt like Improvisation. The two leads (sorry its late and I can't remember names) had great chemistry between each other. they were very well cast and played off each other perfectly. Their dialogue scenes were well written (if they were written). they all felt natural and believable.
The rest of the cast did a very good Job, I got a kick out of Brie Larson and Mary Elizabeth Winstead being in the same movie together. Saul was good in his small scenes and Kyle Chandler was almost unrecognizable as the Dad.
The movie had a very odd tone to it. it was light and fun sometimes, but always had that dark tone that made it feel uneasy. the last act was surprisingly dark, yet I could feel it heading in that direction from the start.
Cons:
The timeline seemed very compressed. almost like it all took place over a few weeks. went from waking up on a girls lawn to sex to driving with her to meet your deadbeat dad? damn. I guess things move fast in suburban Georgia (or whichever state it was set in) just would have liked to see a bit more time pass.
another thing is how did he get all the alcohol? they never dealt with him showing a fake ID, yet he can just walk into a bar and buy beer and shots? where did his stash of flask liquid come from? and how do people not notice it? no teacher saw them at prom or graduation? guess underage drinking is normal there. as long as they're in the bar they're not out on the street, Greater good (greater gooood) kind of thing, right?
another thing I noticed is that none of the actors looked glamorous. Now this is both a pro and con. the only actress who actually looked attractive was Mary Elizaeth Winstead. and that's mostly because that's part of her character. everyone else was without makeup and seemed very plain. It fit the tone of the movie, it's just an odd choice when you have an attractive cast. Oh, and are the guy's scars real? they seemed real.
Comparisons:
This reminded me of Perks of Being a Wallflower. Both had that same high school tone with dark themes. yet I think Perks blew this out of the water completely. it had more likable characters and better time progression. overall just a better movie.
FINAL VERDICT: 79
Good acting and mood, yet lacking in areas
So that's that, another Review down! now to get some shuteye! or stay up!...or sleep, cause i'm tired!

I did really like the last scene. her reaction to him showing up made me curious. Is she happy or angry?
