Hey There,
I never know what to write for my intros. I'd say something witty and clever but, I can't really think of anything. I'd ask Siri, but she'd just search the web for 'something Witty'
Anyway I just walked out of Her. (I'd uncapitalize it like it is in the movie, but the image of me walking out of a girl, or watching a girl is just super creepy.)
Pros:
You Know, I'm gonna buck this trend for this review. One Second,
Cons:
Not many. It's very slow, and extremely heavy. but they work perfectly for the movie.
Though my biggest con is that it brought back a lot of the feelings I've been repressing myself. I walked out of the theatres feeling utterly lost. Yet astounded by the movie.
Pros (again):
Ok, now that those are out of the way, let's do Pros. I Loved this movie. To me it's definitely the Best 'Oscar' movie of the year. Much better than Wolf of Wallstreet or American Hustle. Neither of them were spectacular the way Her was.
Joaquin Phoenix is amazing as Theodore. Almost all of the movie is him reacting to a voice that's not there. the close ups on his face as Samantha and him are courting or fighting, or 'exploring each other' were amazing. he carried this movie completely by himself. an absolutely brilliant acting job, how he didn't win at the Golden Globes I'll never know. Hopefully The Oscars are better. I loved the way he played the character, the quiet nerdy type character, trapped in a shell of depression and throughout the film he gradually breaks out. Until the end I guess.
Scarlett Johansson is great as Samantha. she has a kind of innocence yet still feel sexy at times. I loved her insecurity about not having a body and her curiosity about the world. it takes a brilliant writer to truly capture that.
Amy adams is yet again amazing. she plays the completely platonic best friend who's always there for Theodore. (I'll admit, she reminds me of someone I know....) and I found myself hoping Theodore and her become a couple. Adams has 2 great acting jobs out right now. I hope she gets a supporting Actress nomination for this.
The Rest of the cast do a good job, even Olivia Wilde who plays a date he goes out with but ends up rejecting because of an ex (another memory, woot)
I also want to point out that rooney Mara is becoming one of my favorite actresses.
Moving away from the Acting, Let's focus on the writing. Spike Jonze did an amazing job, the whole movie felt like he took his past relationship and wrote his fantasy. Meeting the perfect girl who becomes his whole life. It's almost like he's had this fantasy for his whole life. and I'm curious who the Ex wife is based off of.
Next up, the Architecture. I don't usually notice this in movies but I loved the city. Turns out it was Shanghai, I thought through the whole thing it was Montreal. I loved it. The weird and odd designs fit perfectly with the futuristic subject matter. I loved the colors and the quirkiness.
I realized how the moment after the movie ended every single person in the movie (I shit you not) pulled out their phone. I had multiple messages and comments on my phone as well. It's scary how dependant on technology we are nowadays. It's also scary how all the way through I had one person in my mind. someone I've been trying very hard to repress. I guess with that it proves just how much I was touched by this movie. I'm a bit afraid to see it again, yet I want to right away.
Also, i want that Game he's playing...Give it to me.
Final Notes:
I loved this movie. It's my favorite of 2014 (so far) and should be a shoe in at the Oscars. I recommend this to anyone who's mature enough to deal with some really heavy subject matter. (I can think of a few people I don't want in the theatre simply for their immaturity)
FINAL VERDICT: 98
Absolutely brilliant and unbelievably moving. only losing points because it brings up bad memories
Ok, so, I have work to do. so, yeah, i may be on later if I can't sleep. Night all.
