Anyong!
Hey all you peoples of the interwebs. Back again for another Review. This time it comes in the form of a Korean film called The Yellow Sea. Don't ask me for names of any characters, actors, or the Director, I literally cannot remember Korean Names. But This director also did The Chaser, one of my top 5 movies of all time.
I somehow stumbled across it completely randomly. so I figured, Must watch.
MOVIE REVIEW: The Yellow Sea
Pros:
The director is very good at dark and brutal films. Chaser was just gut wrenching and Yellow Sea is just as well made. It's a complicated story about a Cab driver who owes money so he goes to Seoul to kill a man on a contract. it goes wrong and he is betrayed so he goes after the contractor. The film has many storylines and lots going on.
The main character did a pretty good job in his role. He stands out, which is good considering I can't tell a lot of the actors apart. The Main villain ( I think) was the main actor in Chaser so I recognized him, I like him as an actor and always enjoy his movies.
Overall the film was very bleak. it had a very depressing and somber feel all the way through it. I really liked how the main character thought out the kill. even if it didn't go as planned. The movie did a good job of showing everything needed to understand the plot for most of the movie.
Cons:
The last half hour or so became a complete mess of 'what the hell is going on?' I found myself utterly confused. trying to figure out who killed who, who slept with who's wife, who paid who. Now maybe if I understood Korean and knew the actors better I'd understand who everyone was but it became such a huge mess of characters.
There is also a Post credit scene that is a bit confusing, I took it one way but apparently most take it another. If you see the movie, let me know what you think it means.
Comparisons:
I'll compare Yellow Sea to Chaser, Oldboy, and Man From Nowhere. I've raved over Chaser, and I love Man From Nowhere. Oldboy is my least favorite of the three, but still a classic.
Vs. Chaser, Chaser is much better written and paced. I found myself checking the time a bit at the end of Yellow Sea where as Chaser was joy all the way through.
Vs. Oldboy, Oldboy had a much better overall story and the late game twist made it unbelievably memorable. Yellow Sea started very strong, but became convoluted and confusing late in the movie, where as Oldboy got almost instantly better. well, maybe not better considering what the twist is.
Vs. Man From Nowhere, I'm choosing man from nowhere because it's one of my favorite Revenge thrillers. It's more of a martial arts film, but I loved it all the way through. the action scenes were great. Unfortunately Yellow sea had really shaky camera and was tough to understand what was going on.
FINAL VERDICT: 80
Great start, Confusing Finish.
So theres another review Down. Now to get some shuteye. Expect a couple more reviews over the next couple days.
