Hej!
Just got back from seeing a matinee of Frozen (10$ for 2 tickets? Awesome!) I've been seriously delaying this movie for quite a while because of the horrible trailer. I saw a bunch of concept sketches and concept art for it and I was really looking forward to it, then, an anthropomorphic snowman playing with a reindeer. crap
anyway, review!
Pros:
Holy amazeballs the animation is beautiful. First and foremost this movie is amazing to look at. it may not have the most realistic animation but it's still great. the Ice Fractals (fractals?) were great, and all the snow and ice effects were cool (see what I did there). I really enjoyed the visuals.
Moving on from the shimmery visuals. let's talk about the characters. I've harped on Disney countlessly for being a one dimensional money machine. But they know how to do animation. Never got around to seeing tangled, but loved wreck it Ralph. (not mentioning their Cars bastardization) Anyway, sorry, tangent, I loved the way the characters unfolded. It was surprising to me how much I enjoyed the sister relationship. I liked how it never felt forced or unbelievable and that Elsa didn't end up the wicked witch of the west. even after defying gravity, err, I mean running away and making a castle.
Christophe and Sven were fun, i liked the inner reindeer voice and various little jokes in there. I'm also so happy that the 'act of true love' was not a kiss, Disney's learned.
And i surprisingly liked Olaf, He was like Donkey in Shrek. He's there and fits, even if I don't really know how he's alive...that was never really explained.
but the best part was Elsa and Anna's relationship, by far.
And finally I loved the Late game twist with Hans. I was kinda rolling my eyes in their 'love song' but after the reveal I instantly went 'well damn, I didn't see that coming at all'
Cons:
I'm cold, screw you winter
Overall i really liked the movie, it somehow stayed away from almost all stereotypes and cliche's. never dragged and didn't have any extraneous characters. It was a really well assembled movie.
My biggest gripe is the horrible advertising. which has no real effect on the movie. but the way Disney has been pushing it's various subtle cultural issues is annoying, yes theres a gay family, yes they make jokes about getting married after 6 hours, don't need to push it in interviews and such.
Final Notes:
I really enjoyed this movie, It's a fun little film that surprised me in its storytelling.
FINAL VERDICT: 93
Lots of fun all around, but I'm cold now.
So that's that, now to go get pizza and cake! Happy Birthday Hannah!
