Movie Review 59: 5 Centimeters per Second

Ohayo!

I know, that's usually my intro for Ghibli films, but lately I've decided it's my general opening for any anime. The latest of which is 5 Centimeters Per Second!

This one has been in the Queue since Youma, so I figured I should get to it finally.

MOVIE REVIEW: 5 Centimeters Per Second

Pros:
First thing I noticed about this movie is it is beautiful. I'll get to the story in a moment but this is some of the most beautiful anime I've seen. it tops most ghibli movies in terms of mood and atmosphere.  every frame felt like the animators took an unbelievable amount of time on. It's easily one of the most gorgeously animated movies I've seen.

The story, or stories rather, were nice. the first was about a couple of junior high kids falling in love but moving away from each other. the second is about a different girl falling in love with the boy, who's still in love with the first. and the third is short but the boy still yearning for his old love, who's getting married. It's a simple story but it's so touching.

the first two stories are very well made and well paced. I was fully engrossed by them.

Cons:
The movie was only about 55 minutes long. there's a four minute music video at the end that kinda just sums up the whole movie. and ultimately the final act seems stunted and not as fulfilling as I would have hoped. I'd have liked to either have a happier ending or an ending where she becomes happy and he doesn't. they kinda leave it ambiguous.

That being said there's not a whole lot about the movie that I can really label as a Con. Amazing animation and touching story wrapped in a short package.

Final Verdict: 88
Beautiful animation and story but too short.

So there's that, Now off to Watch either Psycho-Pass or Black Rock Shooter.
