Welcome back!
So, today was different, went to see Thor 2 again. yeah, food after, twas fun...
anyway, got home and scanned through Netflix, found the animated version of Hellboy. now this actually has the main cast from the movie and is produced by Del Toro.
And here ist being my review!
Pros:
Ron Perlman, Selma Blair, Doug Jones, and John Hurt all return as Hellboy, Abe, Liz and Dr Broom. It gave a whole lot of much needed credibility to this movie and theyre actually the only reasons why I watched it. It's nice to hear perlman saying 'Crap' at every chance.
the film also got a boost from Guillermo Del Toro being a producer. apparently he commissioned this and 'Sword of Storms' after hellboy was made. Most likely to keep the property in production so the rights didnt bounce back to whoever owns the comic rights. I believe that's dark Horse.
Wouldnt it be awesome if Hellboy (directed by del toro of course) did bounce back and joined the universe of Justice League Dark, with Constantine? no? Only me?....fine
Oh and the music was good, as always.
Cons:
I hate this animation style. The Saturday morning cartoon style. it's cheap and thrown together. I'll take almost any anime style before this one. this makes Speed Racer look well made.
otherwise it's got a very bland story. a Vampire from Broom's past is back to kill, and the others rush in to help. not a great story. it also lacked the originality and flare that the movies have. theres no good bad guy, no cool fights, no interesting storylines. it feels like a hour and a half episode of a cheap kids show. maybe if they made the tone dark and foreboding it would have worked.
none of the characters had any personality, the voices were there but they had no inflections in their voices or good dialogue to say.
overall a disappointment, but what else was I expecting?
FINAL VERDICT: 34
YAY HELLBOY!, damn, it's not Hellboy 3
I'm still eagerly waiting for Hellboy 3. Del Toro, Get on that.
