Movie Review 35: My Neighbors the Yamadas

Ohayo!

Welcome back again for another Ghibli review, this time a really obscure one called 'My Neighbors the Yamadas' it has a drastically different animation style than any of the other ghibli films, yet the same director as Grave of the fireflies and Pom Poko.

anyway, Review!

MOVIE REVIEW: My Neighbors the Yamadas

Pros:
The animation is really random, at times during the movie it cut to other styles of minimalist animation, like during the introduction of the Biker Gang it cut to an animatic type style. it's a unique style of animation and the changes were interesting.

The overall stories were cute and fun. though they were random and didnt feel that connected. I feel like younger children would eat this up like crazy, it felt like watching an old children's book with water color drawings.

Cons:
The animation. it was simply too childish for me, it didnt remotely feel like the amazing animation i've come to expect from Ghibli. It was super minimalistic, almost like a short that they made to go before a movie but dragged it into a feature length film.

I wasnt able to attach to any of the family, unlike Nausicaa or Arrietty or Umi and Shun in Poppy Hill. I felt like it was more of an animation test than anything else.

FINAL VERDICT: 65
Interesting style but the animation and bland story hold it back from greatnesss.

So that's done, next up will probably be Ron Howard's Rush, then Grave of the fireflies or Princess mononoke. Stay tuned, and follow me!
