Ohayo!
Yes, I've never seen Totoro before, don't attack me anime fans! I've seen it now, and the rest of the Ghibli collection will follow shortly (not before the Breaking Bad Review tonight though) but yep, my Ghibli collection arrived yesterday! Yay! 16 movies for 30$! woo!
so anyway, instead of starting at the beginning, of the collection, I decided to start with the Flagship character, Totoro!
I can only say that in a slight Canadian accent for some reason....hmm, I wonder why....
Pros:
well, First off the movie is really fun, it doesn't quite have the polish of movies like From up on Poppy Hill or Arrietty, or spirited away, but it's still a really fun movie.
the characters are likable, and it rolls out rather well. The creators obviously had a lot of fun designing the creatures, Totoro, the Catbus, the soot sprites and such. At times I felt like I was watching a drug trip by a 5 year old.
The pacing of the story was fun, reminiscent of old school animated movies like Pinocchio or snow white. it felt like a very early Ghibli, a good place to start.
Cons:
Personally I got a little annoyed with Mei. I don't really like when characters just scream and whine through a movie, and she devolved into that as the film went on. Otherwise I liked Satsuki through most of it.
The animation felt a little dated, but it's understandable, it's as old as I am, (not kidding, it came out only a few months before I did)
The movie kinda made up its own rules as the story went on, i like when a story establishes its rules early on and sticks to them, but this just did what it felt.
Comparisons:
Personally I enjoyed Poppy Hill and Arrietty a little better, when I'm done with the collection I'll do a list of the Ghibli movies based on how much I liked them. Right now Totoro would go above Ponyo but under the other two.
I have to rewatch Howls moving castle and Spirited away, it's been a while since I watched them.
Final Verdict: 79
Fun light movie, but ultimately nothing super memorable. but Totoro is cute, and makes a good pillow
So Totoro is done! coming up are:
Laputa
Grave of the Fireflies
Whisper of the heart
Princess Mononoke
Nausicaa
Kiki's Delivery Service
Porco Rosso
the Cat Returns
Tales from earthsea
My Neighbors the Yamadas
Pom Poko
- And Rewatching -
Howls Moving Castle
Spirited away
Ponyo
I just watched Arrietty and Poppy Hill so those arent gonna be reviewed
Anyway, Later all! Breaking Bad Review later!
