Ohayo!
So i'm on a bit of a japanese movie binge today. just finished the really odd 'Time Traveler, the Girl Who Leapt Throught Time'. as redundant as the title is it was overall a decent movie.
I admittedly was distracted for a half hour or so but i enjoyed it nonetheless
Review time! some spoilers await, I think
MOVIE REVIEW:
Time Traveler, the Girl Who Leapt Throught Time
Pros:
As with most japanese films I enjoy seeing a different culture, and this one was good. the acting was decent through most of it and overall the feel of the movie was good.
It was cool seeing a young filmmaker in 1970's japan, in all his Lost in translation stereotype glory. is that really how japanese directors are?
and wow, that time traveling sequence was one hell of a drug trip. I bet it was in 3D...reminded me of Spy kids 4. I mean, what kind of drugs were they on to have her running on a dinosaur's skeleton then being attacked by numbers?
Cons:
the story was a bit nonsensical at times. the whole idea that the mom was able to time skip, met a boy, fell in love, he erased her memories and now 40 years later her daughter is sent back to the same time, meets the guy, gives him something, then he removes her memory, sends her back and he finds the mom, gives her a lavender, then removes her memory again? if no one remembers what's the whole point of the story in the first place? but she still cries at the movie she help make, which she shouldnt remember anymore? ok
also the foreshadowing of the bus accident was way too obvious, they spend a whole minute watching a news report about a bus accident from 1974 and she ends up in 1974. tho I liked that she couldnt stop it in the end.
the main actress is a little awkward at times, her hand gestures and such felt forced at times like the director told her to add more motion to her scenes and she just threw stuff in.
Final Verdict: 66
Decent little movie, but ultimately it didnt make a lot of sense in the end.
So thats that, Time for some shut eye. or another movie. who knows with my insomnia
