And we're back!
Back to normal movies in Normal theatres. no lines, overpriced concessions and people who don't know how to make Espresso Blenders. oh and huge blockbuster Sci-fi Films!
I should be more excited. I just watched Elysium, one of the movies I stated I was most Pumped for only a few weeks ago.
Turns out, I was disappointed.
- Warning - Spoilers ahead -
MOVIE REVIEW: Elysium
Pros:
Right off the bat I have to mention the Production Design. The futuristic world created in the movie was awesome. The gritty earth areas were gritty, even if a bit sparse. and Elysium was very cool, its inner workings almost feeling like Mass Effect.
The best part of the movie was the Tech. the 'Droids' in the movie that were used as police and military were really cool and felt formidable. They seemed like a force that could mess you up, and the idea of the Exploding AK-47 rounds and the rocket launcher Shotgun was cool.
I loved Matt Damon's Exo suit, but it felt very underused.
Jodie foster was perfectly cast, but didn't have enough to do.
Other than those, I regret to say I cant say much, Matt Damon wasn't anything special
Cons:
this movie is short as hell. I feel like it dragged on and on but then it just ended much earlier than I expected. I was amazed, all the eye candy and no real entertainment value.
The fight scenes went in the vein of eye gouging Shakeycam. Every action scene was either too blurry to understand or in slow motion. The slo mo made for some very awesome shots, but none of them had the 'wow' factor I was hoping for. They just all kind of jumbled together and nothing really stood out.
Sharlto Copey was completely incoherent. He was just there to scream and yell and punch things, then get his face blown off. Which did impress me, until they just repaired it and he went on screaming and yelling.
Matt Damon was seen as just a normal guy but then he develops random super acrobatic jumping skills near the end, what gives?
The story was pretty weak too. Damon is sealed in a radiation container (why were those even there? thanks for no exposition). He has 5 Days to live, He has to go to Elysium to cure himself. To get there he has to Hijack William Fichtner's brain so he can buy a ticket. Fichtner just happens to have the code to reboot Elysium in his brain. Damon gets the reboot code, goes to Elysium, reboots it....That's a very short story. I was hoping for something a little more complex, with at least some character development.
Comparisons:
District 9, District 9 was light years better, the weapons were cooler, the Prawns were awesome, and Sharlto Copey's transformation was engrossing. This had a shrug worthy main character, incoherent sub characters, and barely any story.
District 9 actually showed the firefights in interesting ways, this had Damon fire a whole magazine at one guy, the guy runs down a hallway and there's a tiny blood spray amongst the bullet carnage. Damon never checks if the guy's dead. for all he knows is the guy could be telling his boss whats going on and an army is showing up.
Also the Robots in this sure seemed to move like Prawns sometimes, that might just be me.
Final Verdict: 32
Unfortunately it just didn't impress me, some good visuals cant make up for the lack of story and character and the dodgy fight scenes
As well as above the Sound wasn't very good, but I've decided not to blame that on the movie but the theatre itself.
Also, how hard is it to make an espresso blender at AMC? This guy failed 3 times.
oh and NIPPLE LIGHTS!
