3 Reviews in a row!
this one not so bad as the others!
Before i review it i'll give a little back story as to why I picked it.
I worked on a movie a few years ago called Detention of the Dead. (available now on dvd) well on the IMDB boards one of the first comparisons that someone claimed we 'ripped off' was Bad Kids Go To Hell. so I've always been curious to see what we 'ripped off'. my Comparison section will be detention verse this.
well, anyway, Review!
MOVIE REVIEW: Bad Kids Go To Hell
Pros:
Usually i start by saying writing, or acting, or art direction, but this time i'll say the score, it was consistently cool throughout the movie. which kind of impresses me, it's obviously a low budget movie, and for it to have a soundtrack and score that impresses me is very rare.
besides that there's a few cool moments, the flashbacks are fun and some of the kills are fun. It's a fun movie but isn't anything to rave about.
Cons:
Like most low budget horror/comedies, the digital effects were sub par, the kills sometimes were lackluster and the acting seemed forced. the writing itself seemed happy sticking to stereotypes and 70's movie references.
the clash of 70's movie feel and modern horror was a little confusing. it was so obvious they were spoofing Breakfast club, even had Judd nelson in the cast. yet they insist on having modern technology...and even tho its the morning no one has a working phone to just call for help? it seemed like it was originally written quite a while ago and modern technology adds some plot holes.
also, the haunting story-line felt unneeded. it was there to add horror but came off as just an excuse to have characters kill each other...which might be fine if they made some tongue in cheek humor about it. instead everyone just kinda forgets the dead people....i swear, a person dies, they are forgotten instantly.
Comparisons:
and now for the real question, did Detention of the Dead rip off Bad Kids go to Hell? not really...while they have similar ideas, detention and breakfast club references. one's a zombie film and one's a horrorish comedy. though the scene with the guy falling out of the Ventilation shaft after getting attacked by an animal was similar....otherwise it's the idea of being trapped in a library during detention. that's it. I personally enjoy Detention better, only because i worked on it. if i wasn't biased i'd say that Bad Kids go to Hell was a technically better movie. just being honest. I'd love to say i thought Detention of the Dead was much better, but i watched moth today and Detention is good, but it has it's flaws.
Bad Kids go to Hell was fun and had a cool visual style throughout. not to mention the better soundtrack.
(side-note, i just bought both soundtracks on iTunes during the movie)
Final Verdict: 75
Nothing super amazing, but it's fun enough to keep my attention and the soundtrack is bitchin awesome.
i used the word bitchin, i feel dirty.
Anyway, that should complete my Reviewathon. unless i decide on another one and don't sleep...it's a possibility. we'll see
till it be morrow!
