Hello again!
Again? so soon? Another review right after the other?
Yes, i know its quick, but, well, I just finished watching Paper Man, (the 2009 dramedy with Jeff Daniels and Emma Stone). So, why not? another reviews in order!
It's kind of a somber ending movie so, i hope this review will get a little more upbeat as it goes on, but no promises.
anyway, let's begin!
MOVIE REVIEW: PAPER MAN
- Spoilers-
Pros:
the acting, hands down the best thing about the movie is the acting, particularly Daniels and Emma Stone. they carry the movie completely. The occasional Comic relief of Ryan Reynolds as a Super hero Imaginary friend was fun when the drama needed some cutting. Wallace wells, err, keiran culkin was good as the stalkery/lovelorn friend of Stone's. and Lisa kudrow had a few pretty good scenes as the wife. the movie was very well written and had a rather decent pace.
Cons:
As usual i have a few more cons than pros, not saying the movie was bad, im just better at pointing out things that are wrong than things that are right...i make these for a living, i can tell when somethings lacking. that being said there was very little actually wrong with the movie. one was the focus, and by focus i mean camera focus. theres a few scenes where the camera is slowly pushing in on Emma stone and for most of the middle of the shot she goes out of focus. i understand it was probably a 'her acting is so good lets not make her do it again' type thing, and i agree, the defocus effect actually kinda worked with the shot, adding a slight sense of losing yourself. but as a filmmaker, the focus was poor. not sure if thats a pro or a con now that i think about it. Moving on...the wife seemed like a bitch, which kinda bothered me later when they end up back together. tho i understand maybe he was growing up and moving on.
otherwise, i cant really think of many cons, its a very emotional and depressing story, if you're looking for that, its plenty worth it
Comparisons:
Honestly, i dont really have any true comparisons to make for this one, but some of the parallels between the movie and how im feeling in my real life is staggering. that feeling of being stuck and not knowing how to get out of it was very well portrayed and acted. for the last year i've felt lost and the movie got it down perfectly.
I too used to have an imaginary friend, no-one as cool as Captain Excellent, but it was someone i could talk to and hang out with, maybe thats why i feel the need to blog, hmm...
Cast:
Like i said, the cast was Perfect, all the characters did a very good job with their roles and there wasnt a character i feel was poorly written, well, except chicken shit, i have some friends like him, and they suck...
Overall:
I recommend this film, i feel the advertising focused too heavily on the Superhero Imaginary friend. it's a very well made character study and it moves on at a very good pace. also, as like my last note...they had an origami sideplot, and origami is awesome, yes it is.
Final Verdict: 83
very well written, great acting, and leaves you thinking.
Well, i mentioned Origami at the end there so i think i'll do an Origami based top 5 this time
Top 5 Origami Models (single piece)
5. Butterfly, I like making these, very simple and visually pleasing
4. Swan, I enjoy making these, and the model above just happens to be from a TV show, points for knowing which
3. Money Heart:These are pretty simple to make, If i fancy a waitress i quite often make these for them, hey, i can be romantic sometimes
2. Kawasaki Rose: This is easily one of the hardest models i've ever made and i went through tons of paper when i was trying, it's one of the most pleasing models and also a great thing to give on a date.
1. Crane, Lets face it, it's the Classic, I've made over 2,000 of them, theyre easy to make and look great in large strands.
That list was actually Much harder than it should have been, i do origami all the time, but usually only Modular stuff, like 20 units connected together to make a bg super awesome model. i'll post a few pictures of my previous stuff later in ze blog
anyway, hope you enjoy the review, feel free to subscribe, i should be updating quite a lot, i have lots of movies on my netflix Queue that i've yet to watch, so stay attentive everyone
