So, i lied
the next review isn't Monsters university, nor the Heat, it's the Indie dramedy 'Struck By Lightning'. written by Chris Colfer. for the other Gleeks out there, that's Kurt.
I was surprised, going into it i wasnt expecting much, but it actually was pretty well written, and really reminded me of what i was like in high school. very driven but noone seemed to care.
Might as well just get on with the review before i delve into my own history, cause noone cares about that.
MOVIE REVIEW: Struck By Lightning
-Possible spoilers-
Pros:
good acting and writing, as well as a good pace made it go by pretty quick. never really dragged and never felt campy or trying for laughs. Colfer did a very good job as the lead and the surrounding cast was a good compliment.
Cons:
for as well written as it feels, i also feel like there were a lot of dropped storylines. for one the blackmails he had over all the people were never brought up again, i would have liked if one of the blackmailees grew up a bit and admitted it, especially the closet gay couple. another one was the father and christina hendricks, a lot of potential there that just disappeared from the story. the story had potential but ultimately it just ended, no wrap up, no character development, the one ballerina cheerleader could have been a great story arc but she didnt go anywhere...they had the option of her changing the prom to 'what do you want to be' instead of the generic stuff...that way she has some change.
did he ever start taking those antidepressants that were mentioned in one scene? no? ok, ill add that to dropped plot lines.
Comparisons:
to me, the show feels a bit like a Glee episode. except no music and pointless drama...lots of potential but ultimately they forget storylines and end up meandering for the later season. I enjoyed Struck By Lightning, but i feel like it could have been so much more. at only 83 minutes i feel it could have added another half hour to write some wrap ups before the lightning strikes. oh well, coulda shoulda.
Cast:
the cast was very good, Colfer was great as the lead, he has a quality of intelligence and likability, even when he's playing someone unlikable. Fat amy was fine, toned down alot since Pitch Perfect, so she wasnt as annoying as she usually is. allison janney was scattershot as the mom, she was a trainwreck in one scene and normal the next, i think this is more a directors issue tho. the blackmailees were good, particularly the ballerina cheerleader. not only was she cute but i thought she had a lot of potential in the 'what did you want to be' scene, but she never really played with it later. Hendricks and the father were fine, hendricks pretty much just stood there playing coy and cute..which is fine, nothing to complain about, she's attractive and has big boobs, not much to expect from her. and the grandma was tough to pin down, dimentia is like a writers crutch, 'hey i need an old person, lets make them say random shit'
Im being overly harsh, i really did enjoy the movie, its a smartly written indie comedy thats a lot darker than most out there. just dont expect it to really go anywhere.
Final Verdict: 74
Good, but short and lacking conclusion.
Well, i might as well do a top 5 relating to this, hmm, i'm thinking just a Glee related one, why not, im not a hardcore glee fan, but i figure if youre still reading this you at least like my humor and random writing style so ill write a wee bit more
Top 5 Glee Characters
5. Bryan ryan: Lets face it, neil patrick fuckin Harris. end of story
4. Mike chang: i like that he's a dancer and not a singer, i've always been similar
3. Shuester: he's likable, usually, and he's one of the few ones with a straight head on, usually
2. Kurt: i enjoy the emotional episodes, like his fathers heart attack and the kurt blaine break up. i think colfer is one of the best actors on the show.
1. Santana: i like bitches, and santana's kinda amazing.
I'll leave you with that and be on my way, i have a small story to write
